i have hip pain shooting down my leg, what should i do?
mri results: impression: L4 L5 degenerative disc disease with disc bulge and right lateral neural foraminal protrusion with mild thecal sac and moderate to severe medial right-sided neural foramina narrowing and moderate medial left-sided neural foramina narrowing in combination with posterior element hypertrophy.
will this go away soon?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but as a general rule discs don’t repair themselves. Not only that , the longer the injury goes untreated, the lower the success rate when treatment does occur.
To make matters worse, the “pain shooting down my leg” is indicative of sciatica, a condition where the sciatic nerve is pinched or damaged. This is often a permanent condition, that at best would improve mildly if surgery to free it was undertaken.
I personally have been plagued by back problems since the age of 15. I had my first back surgery at the age of 15 for a herniated disc. Since then I’ve damaged my L4 L5 like you, but can’t have surgery because of other medical problems.
In terms of treatment I think I’ve tried pretty much everything, with no success. Physiotherapy can provide temporary relief. Facetary blocks (injection of medication directly into the spine) did absolutely nothing for me.
If this injury is fresh, I’d advise you to go see a nerosurgeon. You may be a candidate for surgery and that, in my opinion, would offer you the best chance at regaining an almost “normal” back.
Im not sure how I did it, but I think it was sitting on a stool the other day for 3 hours, but now I’m in a lot of pain.
I’ve got tight hamstrings in the front of my hips across the back of my buttocks and my lower back is quite painful. Is there anything I can do to easy the tightness?
Would this have been caused by sitting? I’m usually really flexible but now finding it difficult to bend over etc.
If the pain is in your lower back region (lumbar or sacral) then this could be a result of your tight hamstrings pulling on your serratus posterior interior muscle.
Tight hamstrings would limit the flexion of the hip when your knee joint is extended (ie. bending over).
Try these stretches:
Supine Active
- Lie on back holding knee from behind, pulled toward chest
- Gently straighten leg
- Repeat with other leg
Bil Long sitting
- Sit on firm surface with legs straight out in front
- Slowly bend forward at hips, reaching for toes
DO NOT ALLOW KNEES TO BEND
Supine Wall
- Lie on back, one leg elevated and positioned against a doorway, forming a 90 degree angle with the other leg
- Buttocks should be about 5 inches from wall, low back on floor
- Gently slide buttocks toward wall, keep knee straight, until stretch is felt
- Relax and repeat
Uni Standing
- Stand with one heel propped on low table, knee straight
- Gently and slowly lean forward at waist
- Repeat with other leg
KEEP KNEE STRAIGHT
Perform 1 set of 4 repetitions twice a day for each stretch.
hold 20-30s for all stretches
As per cause by sitting, I highly doubt that, unless you were slouched like a monkey then perhaps yes. Make sure to sit tall and straight if you are sitting for such a prolonged period of time, buttocks all the way back in the seat.
Hope this helps, it’s insanely long!

I wondered what would be the differential diagnosis when presented with a 82yr old woman who fell week one, (-) X-rays for fractures of the hip, c / o pain in the left leg and lower back pain score, 8 / 10 in mutual oral with little or no little relief? More specifically, how a hip fx presents a different way sciatic L4 / 5 + Acute rupture? (This is a case study, not a real patient). Thanks! EDIT: In this case, the damage would have been only 2-3 days. The question asked what would you do, and I thought that if the X-ray MRI came back (-) because no CNRA clearly not working. In fact, what happened, that the radiologist missed fracture in the first series of images, then he grabbed her recovery.
A hip fracture by 99% of the time appear on X-rays, and the pain is in the groin or thigh, the pain is deep and could not stay with the weight put it on. It is unlikely for me 82 to a disk failure, more likely than it would stenosis, but symptoms even / Similar. The nerve pain radiating from back problems and pain in muscles and tissues, where failure would be a big pain in the bones. You mention medications that ICN is not to control the pain, the time the patient was put on them? Hope this helps

Severe, Chronic Pain in Hips with no findings in an MRI. What could be the cause?
I have had hip pain for over a year now and it has recently become much more severe. My Dr. ordered an MRI and called to tell me that it shows no reason for my pain. I am frustrated, as I thought the MRI would tell us how to make it better. I am young and should not be in this much pain, but here I am.
Does anyone know what this could be?
an MRI scan shows more than an x-ray does, so I don’t need an x-ray. I also believe the burcitis would show on an MRI.
I once had pain in my hips. Had your Doctor ever brought up Bursitis before. I was in my early teens when I was in this pain. I have always had such chronic pain so I know how you feel. But Bursitis is the one thing that I can think of.

One of my friends recently went to the gyno and she said on the questionere there was one about hip pain. Does anyone know why they ask that? It has got me realy freaked out. I recently got insurance but my appointment is not until next week. I was just curious why they ask and if I should be worried. Thanks for all of your help
You probably have a pinched sciatic nerve – happens to me all the time. You might want to see a physiotherapist.
