hip replacement tennis
Lump under skin, size of tennis ball, moves around…above my left hip (lower back)?

i had a total hip replacement 2 years ago and this lump is in that area…it feels achey and uncomfortable…i have no idea what this is…i know what scar tissue is and i have a fair amount of that…but this lump is not on, or really near my scar…its my lower back/behind the hip that was operated on…anyone know what this could be?
please dont reply if all you will say is “see a doctor”…as i have booked an appointment which is in 2 weeks time…
i’m 24 by the way…young for a hip replacement, i know…was born breach, had loads of hip ops since birth…

Unfortunately it’s hard to really give you an accurate answer about what the lump is without the testing and examination. Since if moves around, it may be something as simple as a cyst or it could even be a lipoma- which is a fatty non-cancerous type of tumor. They can reach a substantial size, although generally they reach size over time, rather than suddenly appear out of nowhere and be huge. As you are old enough to have had a total hip replacement, I suspect it could well be a lipoma. Those are more common in women of a “certain age”, than men. Either cyst or lipoma are easily enough taken care of, with a short in office procedure. Given the size you say it is, it probably aches because it presses against nerves, muscle and scar tissue in the area- and the body doesn’t much care for things being where there isn’t room for them to be. However to get a definite answer, you will just have to wait until you see the doctor and have it checked out. In the meantime, think positive. Most of what goes wrong with us is actually something simple and easy to fix. Chances are your lump will be too.

hip replacement therapy pain
How can I improve my mobility with significant arthritis in one hip?

At 51, my orthopedist says I am too young for a hip replacement but the pain with each step has become agonizing, and the limping has caused imflammation in my SI joint. The doctor suggests three physical therapy sessions a week but with a deductible of 40.00 each adding another 480.00 minimum to my monthly budget just isn’t in the cards. And- I have had some physical therapy with little or no results. Can anyone suggest anything?
I have tried a cane, but it seems that the cane doesn’t help the hip pain much, since so much of the pain has migrated to my right SI joint and my right leg seems to have torqued a bit inward. I have tried using the cane in both hands without a lot of success.

I find it very frustrating when orthopedists say someone is “too young” for a hip replacement. Does that mean you should stop being active until you are “old enough” for a hip replacement?

To say the very least, at least he/she is trying conservative options first. First, regarding the frequency of PT of three times a week, I rarely find this to be needed unless the case is very acute or post-surgical. Most non-surgical, chronic pains can be addressed with a frequency of two times a week…especially because the goal is to show someone a home exercise program…we certainly aren’t going to cure your arthritis, so it will require long term management. PT at 1-2 times a week is often very appropriate. This may certainly make it more affordable. However, I realize that you have tried PT before, and perhaps either you need a different approach of PT or that PT simply isn’t the answer for you.

My next suggestion would be to discuss a water aerobics class…particularly if you have a facility that follows the guidelines of the national arthritis foundation. Programs sponsered by the NAF keep the pool heated to a certain degree which tends to be more comfortable for people with arthritis. You very well may get some relief from this type of program which focuses on low impact joint movements, cardiovascular health and joint flexiblity. However, even if you don’t get pain relief, at least you can exercise in a medium that should make exercise more tolerable.

You may also wish to discuss cortisone injections as a way to mange your pain. A hip resurfacing procedure, a less invasive surgery than a hip replacement may also be of consideration. Even a hemi arthroplasty would be less invasive. These are all options to discuss with your surgeon.

Next, you could venture to alternative therapies…accupunture etc. …however, the jury is still out on these types of approaches. To say the very least, it won’t hurt you or worsen your condition.

Finally, if you’ve exhausted all your options and it HAS been confirmed that arthritis is the cause of your hip pain and your surgeon continues to refuse a hip replacement, I would simply seek another opinion. I see no reason to disable a young person because they are “too young” for the procedure. While it is true that you may eventually need a revision surgery in the future, you should know that hip replacement procedures are lasting longer and longer…I’ve seen several that have lasted greater than 10 years (and remember that the technology has improved since then) and I’m sure we’ll start seeing them last 15-20 years. At that rate, better to have your revision done by age 71, rather than waiting until you are 65 to have the surgery and having to go through a revision at the age of 85 when surgery becomes a greater risk!

…I have seen MANY hip replacments performed in people under the age of 60…in fact, several have been in their 40s….it has GREATLY improved the quality of their life.

Best wishes to you.

total hip replacement rehabilitation

During his rehabilitation process from either a hip or knee replacement, presented with a variety of exercises to ensure its success. Exercises must be presented in an orderly manner, taking into account the date of surgery, general medical status and age.

At the hospital immediately after surgery, most of the years he has be given what is called isometric in nature. The frequency and duration that you will be asked to complete such exercise protocol depends on the surgeon or therapist physical play as assigned.

After leaving the hospital, will be assigned either a center skilled nursing or patients of the clinic, or receive home health care to continue her physical rehabilitation. Usually one of these three parameters that the exercise program will intensify and the ease with which the exercise can be done as it is much less common.

frequency and duration of exercise is the key that should be discussed with each patient, not only before but after the surgery. There is so much information today about how and when the year and the amount leaving most people confused. With most of the information is contradictory. There is also the old school of thought "no pain, no gain ", which in my previous writings, I said that this is not necessarily the case and can proceed without excessive pain. In fact, it has been determined in most of patients by promoting excessive pain after surgery slowed the process and also encourages non-compliance with the exercise protocol.

During recovery from surgery to replace the ideal frequency of exercise I've found with my patients is twice daily. Once in the morning another training in the afternoon. The timing of these two sessions can be critical. Proper spacing of the sessions must be taken into account to avoid excessive fatigue and pain. Just over three exercise sessions per day is counter-productive and breaks the physical body.

Its recommended that practice sessions are spaced approximately 4-6 hours apart. If the training was intense enough time to let your body recover and cool in the next session.

For proper spacing of the frequency and duration of exercise or time spent exercising, you will have better control over their levels of pain and edema of the limb.

There are many elements involved in the hip or knee with success. One of the main problems if you want to understand the frequency and duration of exercise will be. If you can dominate and listen to what your body is telling you will have a successful outcome.

Remember: no more than three sessions per day, but two of preference. Total exercise time during its session there should be no more than 20-30 minutes, with no more than 5-8 years in total for each session.

back hip pain numbness
Is back pain when sneezing indicate a spinal cord injury?

I hurt my lower back lifting weights two weeks ago. After two weeks, it feels much better. There is a slight pain when bending at the hips or driving too long, but nothing serious, just uncomfortable. I think strange that it hurts a little when you sneeze or tighten the abdominal muscles. I thought it was just a muscle strain, because I can still walk normal and do other normal activities. So I decided to skip the doctor and a little rest and ibuprofen. I have no numbness or pain in the ass running or leg. But I heard the pain when sneezing is a self-diagnosis of injuries to the spine. Is this true?

Im not a doctor at least very, can have neuropathic pain, caused by increasing pressure in your body sneezing or it could just be the pain of a strained muscle. But it might be something more serious as the injury of the spine or a ruptured disc. You must decide if their value does not have the heart net. I recommend consulting a doctor or chiropractor in case.

hip pain numbness
what is the cause of my hip pain?

when i sleep i usually sleep on my side, and when i am on my left side i wake up in the middle of the night with alot of pain in my hip and up in my butt cheek that feels like a throbbing or a sort of numbness., once it wakes me up i roll over and it goes away. it doesnt give me any problems during the day when im walking or sitting or anything. just when i sleep or sit in my bed.
ive read things about arthritis and it seems to have the symptoms i have.
but im not 100% sure
if you have any ideas please let me know
thankss :D

I have a severe form of arthritis and Had both hips replaced about 10 yrs ago. If you have that the earlier you catch it the better. If its early you have options. I needed the surgery because I let it get bad before I got checked. ( I have an irrational fear of doctors.) By the way I get around pretty good now and I was in a wheelchair. I can’t run, the jerky motions hurt. But I walk, swim, and ride a bike well.Overall I’m happy.
P.s. In the meantime put a pillow between your knees for temporary relief in bed. Good luck and God bless.

Is knee arthritis inevitable with aging?

It is the common perception of target = "_self" title = "arthritis"> Osteoarthritis of the knee in our country where the primary hip osteoarthritis is rare. However, in the recent past, we realized that not only people a higher risk of osteoarthritis, but many more middle-aged and young, even. Osteoarthritis is the most common disease of joints (arthritis) and is a cause significant disability in older adults in India and many countries. It is the common idea that the wear inevitable part of aging only leads to osteoarthritis, but this is not the whole truth. As we will see not only the elderly, but others are also vulnerable to osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) in joints peripheral, most commonly involves the knee joint, and the disease can affect one or more of the three compartments of the knee. The knee joint acts for the transfer of the strength of the leg thigh muscles to move the body. The loads exerted on the surfaces of the knee during normal daily activities are the two to seven times body weight. It is therefore not surprising that the knee is very vulnerable to wear and tear (osteoarthritis). osteo-arthritis changes in the lower joint efficiency charge transfer during these activities. Overall health is compromised and osteoarthritis of the knee has been shown to take into account several limitations walking, climbing ladders or other daily activities as the disease of others. The form of the disease in the elderly is called primary osteoarthritis, while the pain of young and middle-aged is called secondary osteoarthritis. Check out the risk factors for the development of secondary osteoarthritis, which includes other age groups of people in the general population.

There are two general categories or systemic and local risk.

General risks

Evolution

The man with two other mammals, the elephant and the bear are the only animals that have the knees straight. Evolutionarily straight knees are very valuable to minimize the energy consumption during progress for the body does not change from left to right as it would if the knees are bent into a creature with two legs. The price or the side effects of the foot is weight transmission occurs in the inner half of the knee joint. Therefore, the internal environment of the knee is likely to be in the normal course of time.

Genetics

These play an important role in a generalized form of the disease known to affect some communities and families. The investigation is to determine the exact gene that increases susceptibility to osteoarthritis.

Regime

Many degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis are the result of damage tissues of oxygen free radicals attack. Normal cartilage cells are known to reduce free radicals. Antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E have the potential to protect against tissue damage such. It has been found in a study that people who consume high amounts of vitamin C have a 60-70 percent reduction in the risk of progressive osteoarthritis. High levels of vitamin C have also been associated with a lower risk for knee pain, according to this study.

Vitamin D plays an important role in bone mineralization. The results of this study show that high levels are protective against disease progression.

DMO

About three decades ago, surgeons remove the head of the femur end in elderly patients with fracture of the hip replacement operation at the hip, said the final bone rarely showed arthritic changes. Since then, numerous studies have confirmed the inverse relationship between osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. At present research is to determine whether prescription medications for osteoporosis, including calcitonin and Bisphoshphonates avoid X-ray changes of osteoarthritis and prevent deterioration of cartilage.

Male hormone deficiency (estrogen)

The impact of increases in knee osteoarthritis in postmenopausal women suggesting that estrogen deficiency could be a risk factor and that postmenopausal women are more susceptible to osteoarthritis. Despite the obvious correlation, more research is needed to understand the relationship between bone mineral density, estrogen and osteoarthritis. Because women are the dominant sex in osteoarthritis knee or prosthetic knee implants designed for human-specific total knee arthroplasty as the majority of people (two thirds), who underwent to the knee are women.

Local risk factors

Obesity

weight gain contributes to increasing the load transmitted to the knees of support weight by a factor of three to seven times the weight of the body and leads to accelerated wear of articular cartilage. The relationship between obesity and osteoarthritis is stronger than unilateral and bilateral disease is higher among women than men. Since the load transmitted to the knees varies from three to seven times the body weight reduction after weight leads to three to seven times less pressure on the knees. In addition, the alignment of the knee may affect the impact of weight on the knee joint. Knees with bowed legs are more stressed by body weight resulting from the medial compartment arthritis more severe.

Physical Activity

There is no evidence that participation in light or moderate levels of physical activity (walking, running, dancing, biking, gardening and outdoor sports) throughout the life cycle increases the risk of an individual suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. This means that even middle-aged people can safely participate in these activities without the risk of developing osteoarthritis.

But participation in a contact sport, the intensity is strongly linked to development of osteoarthritis the knee in elite athletes. Many tennis players, runners, football players, professionals are more likely to suffer from arthritis of the knee osteoarthritis and age patellofemoral matched controls.

Professional activity

Men in occupations requiring repetitive use of the knee joint, for example, carpenters, painters, miners, dock workers have an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knee. Squatting, kneeling, squatting, climbing stairs and lift heavy loads, all the common causes excessive load through the knee joint and lead to cartilage damage. Risk factors are similar for men and women.

Injury

Several studies in Europe and America have confirmed that the knee injury is a strong predictor for the development of osteoarthritis of the knee. Most knee injuries involve the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament and anterior cruciate ligament rupture is often associated with a tear torn meniscus or medial collateral ligament. ACL injuries occur after two accidents Wheeler, internal and external injuries. Both the deficit and fracture meniscus are closely related to ACL early degenerative arthritic changes. Increased joint laxity accompaniment age contributes to osteoarthritis.

Muscle

It is a known observation that people with osteoarthritis have a weak quadriceps. It was assumed that the decrease in muscle strength is the result of atrophy secondary to knee pain, but has recently been observed that many asymptomatic patients with knee arthritis have weak muscles. It is therefore logical to develop the muscles of the thigh to prevent or reduce symptoms of arthritis after creation, but it should be noted that increases muscle strength does not stop the progression of the disease.

In summary knee osteoarthritis once considered an inevitable consequence of aging is now recognized to be multi-factorial, resulting from the interaction general and local factors such as age, bias Genetics, obesity, injuries and property mechanical seal. The traditional surgical treatment of osteoarthritis "a total knee replacement is the best solution the long-term cost effective. Many Choices for Men’s Wedding Bands

Until relatively recent times, most men’s wedding band shoppers were limited to selection at their local jewelry store. The local jeweler would have a handful of gold wedding bands and the groom would make a selection from what was on hand-usually a fairly simple yellow or white gold band. These wedding bands looked like just about every wedding band out there; that is, everyone was basically selecting a ring for the same simple wedding band designs.

Another limiting factor was the skill of the local jeweler. He was most likely trained to work with 14 carat gold and did not have the training or equipment to work with materials such as titanium—a relative newcomer to the jewelry market. As a result, it was a bit discouraging to look for a truly special and unique wedding band.

Nowadays, men’s wedding bands come is a huge variety of designs and materials, many of which you can only find online or at a specialty jeweler. No longer do grooms need to settle with the plain and lackluster designs at their local jeweler.

One trend that has grown dramatically in popularity is the use of titanium for rings. There are literally hundreds of unique designs available online, and if you’re lucky enough to have a skilled artisan in your area, locally. Titanium does require special techniques and equipment, which is why your local jeweler is unlike to carry titanium rings. In fact, it’s not uncommon for local jewelers to spread the myth that titanium rings cannot be cut off in case of an emergency. (This is 100% false!)

Titanium is a near-perfect material for rings for several reasons. First, it’s hypoallergenic, which means it will not react with human skin triggering allergic reactions. It’s also non-reactive with most substances; including most acids, cleaning products and sea water. Titanium is also extremely lightweight, a lot lighter than gold and nearly one-fifth as heavy as platinum. Because of these reasons, titanium has gained widespread usage outside of jewelry, including aircraft, submarines, industrial plants and hip and joint replacements.

What designs are available for titanium men’s wedding bands? It has become increasingly popular to have a titanium ring with an inlay material. For example, Koa wood, a native wood to Hawaii, makes for an excellent inlay material for titanium rings. Other popular wood inlays include Mango, Wenge, Cocobolo, Blood, Black and Ivory woods. These rings are always unique to the wearer due the characteristics of the wood.

Other popular titanium wedding band inlay materials include Opal, Turquoise, Tigers Eye, gemstones and, of course, gold and silver. These rings—all unique—are exquisite in their design and stunning in their appearance. For example, the combination of wood and mineral inlays makes for some titanium rings that are unsurpassed in their beauty.

Unfortunately, you are unlikely to discover all the possibilities at your local jewelry shop. You need to go online and buy from a reputable online store. If the store does not allow you to customize your ring width, profile and size, you should look elsewhere as they are probably just a reseller and do not make the rings they sell.
