back hip pain pregnancy
ways to relieve back pain during pregnancy?

I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my third baby and the baby lying on my pelvis .. is the hip pain Causin me and back pain … Anyone know a way to facilitate this, please would be grateful

Our coach class delivery promised delivery of the ball (the same as a regular exercise ball that is much less expensive) to do the trick! It seems to help some, but was in my third trimester so I dont know if you experience the same problem. I would just sit on it and roll around some while watching TV or anything. He said is because the extra weight of baby messes with the postural muscles to cramp and lower back the ball rolling all these areas opens back up. We hope that you feel better:)

hip pain from back surgery
Intense pain and breathing difficulty from scoliosis surgery 23 years ago?

My cousin had her spine broken and reset along a metal rod and her hip and shoulder blade moved into alignment when she was 12 because the scoliosis was so severe there was a risk of death. She has been fine until the last three years when she started having pains in her chest, ribs and back. This has been diagnosed as chest infections and hiatus hernia but the latest xray shows the rod is squashing her lungs and the GP said the only thing for it was pain killers. She is really worried cos the pain is so intense at times she can’t bear it. Has anyone else had experience of this? Any advice? Can anyone give me any links to this happening and how people have been treated?
Thank you, Black cat! I emailed my cousin your answer. That is very interesting. She says the pain is like having someone sit on her chest and punch her in the back. The thing she most fears is feeling like she can’t breathe – and she really can’t, she’s been given a pump. Does that sound familiar to you?

Hello i too had surgery for scoliosis 24 years ago, i am in the UK if that makes any difference to any answer,i have a Harrington rod in my back and they have stopped using these now in the UK as they cause problems to the patient,so as it was 23 years ago i assume she has the Harrington rod too,my back was severe and i had a double curvature(and still have)and i almost died from complications days after it,

when you say severe pains what sort are they, sharp or dull,if sharp it suggests nerve pain if so the rod may well have moved and is touching a nerve which can cause extreme agony,i have had the nerve pains myself in the past around 4 years ago, scoliosis surgery often causes problems later on,

i find it strange she has been told only pain killers can help, after all it is 2010 has she been seen by a consultant or just her GP? she may need to have the rod removed and replaced with a new modern version, as i say i heard they no longer use Harrington’s for this very reason they can cause problems later on,

so i wouldn’t settle for that answer of course something can be done, its not normal to be left in pains that is so bad,my rod moved once and came away from the bone it too was the dreaded Harrington, sorry i don’t have more detailed answer but i can give a link for scoliosis support,

its a site to ask answer and and chat with others who have scoliosis from all over the world,it is here i got the information that Harrington rods are no longer used in the UK i learnt quite a bit so they may be able to help further,

http://www.scoliosis-support.org

but whatever dont give in and dont settle for nothing cant be done, hope she gets this sorted and soon.

ADDED EXTRA:Her symptoms sound scary and they turn around and tell her they cant do anything,i had some problems in the past with bad pains and i couldnt breathe properly, as when i breathed in the pain got stronger,i felt like i was under water my pains where sharp and dull at the same time,it turned out to be a nerve being touched or pinched at some point by the rod, there was talk of another operation but it calmed down on its own, but at times i do get the wave of pains and the same sensation come over me but have told no one because i dont want more surgery after the complications i had the last time,so it could be a nerve thats getting touched or pinched for her that causes these symptoms,as depending on what nerve is affected gives different symptoms and for her its affects her breathing,as every nerve in our spinal column has a job to do and breathing is one of them,so thats what makes me think of a nerve being affected,so in turn affects her breathing and something can be done about that, doctors often try to brush us off, and just sending her away with a pump and painkillers is not on she needs to get to the bottom of it and treat the problem and not the symptoms, not sure if i am of any help i have tried to explain things my way about the nerve pains,i have had that happen to me and still does at times, it makes me feel like i am suffocating so i know how she feels.

Right side abdominal pain at 32 weeks of pregnancy?

I am 32 weeks pregnant, my first child. During the last 24 hours I had pain in the lower right. It goes from moderate to almost severe. It is common ground with smooth, if I move fast, it hurts worse. hip pain in the right side also. The hip pain that I touched the baby on the fun but should be more concerned about abdominal pain or is this normal? Could be the cause of my hip pain? Any ideas what is causing it?

do is a bit further down the leg? if so, it sounds like sciatica – Sciatic nerve that runs through the hip / lower back and lower leg. you could say that the baby sitting on it, but when Flairs above, often is a symptom of potassium deficiency. eat bananas … have one every day and will dissipate in about a week.

Back and hip pain 17w2d pregnant?

I’m 17w2d and I have back and hip pain that comes and goes on my right side, It’s especially bad when I first wake up from laying on, I used a body pillow last night and it helped a lot I didn’t wake up at 4 or 5 because it was uncomfortable thank god. I would of been a walking nightmare rofl! But is there anything else I can do, and what would be causing it? I go to the doctor tomorrow, So I’ll ask them too, Just curious if anyone else had this problem this early?

It happened to me with my pregnancy. my back and hips started hurting at around 15 weeks. Doctor told me it was normal due to the body changing to accommodate the baby.Use light heat on your back sleep on your side with a pregnancy pillow. I had a hard time trying to sleep on either back or side and found it easy to be propped up on my back with a pillow under my lower back and knees. Worked like a charm till labor.

Inauguration Provided Much Needed Pain Relief

Last Monday I sought and secured an apt with an acupuncturist seeking relief from excruciating leg and back pain.  I’ve had some pain these past months, but Sunday it flared up in a new way–uber pain–and I needed relief.  The highly trained and expert acupuncturist explained to me that in a perfectly healthy body oxygen and blood flow freely through our veins and arteries to feed our organs and muscles.  Yet when blockages occur in our arteries and veins, the potential for disease erupts, often followed by symptoms; i.e., pain.  Well, yes, I was definitely in the pain category!

After pressing on various locations on my leg, ankle and hip he nearly had to scrape me from the ceiling where I rocketed to from the pain.  He deduced that I had obstructed circulation.  Basically a narrowing of the all important arteries & veins was causing poor circulation and the pain was symptomatic of that.  Always curious I asked, “What are the principal causes of these narrowed arteries?”   He replied, “Well genetics is #1, followed by a couple other potential causes.”  I leaned forward, “what’s #2?”  He answered, “Stress.”  I didn’t feel any need to ask about #3; the conversation turned another direction from there.

He warned me that one treatment wouldn’t be viable.  I would need to commit to at least 3 treatments, to which I readily agreed.  He inserted several needles and immediately I felt relief.  He chattered about the different treatments-pain relief or symptom cure-listed on his intake form.  Not being an acupuncture specialist, I had checked the box stating, “Whichever the doctor recommends” so we agreed on both pain relief and addressing and curing the cause of the blockage(s).

One day later as I luxuriated in all the TV coverage of the inauguration of our 44th United States’ President, it dawned on me.  Of course!  We, in the United States of America were in pain of one sort or another-lost job, foreclosed home, inability to afford health care, failure to sell our homes, battered investment portfolios, general depression or dismay at our downward slide as a nation on so many fronts.

We had managed to obstruct the healthy circulation of money in our banking systems and on Wall Street.  We had also managed to obstruct the healthy circulation of truth and honor in our government such that we were as a nation suffering from VERY poor circulation indeed.  Our collective organs were suffering and our muscles weakened.

The powerful Wall Street executives had blocked the flow of capital; lies had obstructed and narrowed the flow of truth, such that we were plenty diseased, and plenty pained.  No longer is that pain reserved primarily for ENRON, WorldCom, Lucent or Lehman employees.  I hearken back to April 13, 1958 when Harry Truman stated in the Observer, “It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose yours.” Ouch!  Indeed our nation and many of her people are pained amidst disease; the perfect storm of the confluence of our financial, regulatory and government impotency and failures.

Yet on this day, this 20th day of January, we gathered together-amidst our pain-in spirit and flesh to witness the swearing in of Barack Obama, the people’s president.

Over a million (maybe 2) people-some famous, most commoners–somehow planned ahead, fought traffic and security check points, and reassured their bodies of their warmth amidst freezing cold temperatures, to attend.  No, they weren’t crazy; they were committed.  They exchanged emails and texts and formed community in a few short hours.

I digress to the analogy that we rally behind our athletic teams or sport stars because it interests us, and it focuses us/joins us together, we share a common bond.  We’ll not be “in their league” yet we find ways to relate.  I, for one, bought a #10 NY Giants Official NFL blue jersey after watching Eli Manning deftly dodge that sea of New England Patriots’ defenders last Super Bowl and I don it when I need or want a confidence boost.

Somehow however I felt differently about an Obama jersey…kinda like it wasn’t adequately “befitting” to honor my President by wearing his image on a jersey.  Mind you, I don’t begrudge anyone’s buying Obama paraphernalia-God knows the economy sorely needs consumer spending-and moreover it certainly did seem to unite people, allowing folks to display their unwavering support.

Yes he is; President that is.  Yes, this President IS different.  In the past weeks, we’ve seen a man who despite his polish and cloak of calm, chattered freely about the verdict on what breed of dog that he and Michelle will give to Malia and Sasha, to fulfill their campaign promise.  We’ve seen a man who despite the continued swirl of economic ills and world unrest since his resounding victory on November 4th reminded us respectfully that we have only “One president at a time.”  We’ve seen a President-Elect that has been uncharacteristically committed to bi-partisanship within his cabinet.  And on the eve of the Inauguration President-Elect Obama graciously hosted a dinner honoring his general election rival, John McCain.

This time we see a President who more than tapped into young people’s social networking-he actually evoked and enlisted the interest of our youth and they responded….VOILA!  Mutuality at work.  I’m jumping ahead of myself here, yet as President Barack & Michele Obama danced at the Inauguration Youth Ball-wasn’t that a 1st?-he paid a very gracious and more-than-fitting thank you to those under age 35 in his speech.  Apparently his new interactive White House website (another first) was up before he even uttered the oath.

Yes, this Inauguration was different.  While millions watched what otherwise was an expertly choreographed MEGA event (during which not 1 arrest was made) it was the brilliant Chief Justice John Roberts who flubbed” his once-memorized 35 word President’s oath of office.  Wasn’t that graceful how Barack stopped, allowing the Chief Justice to correct himself?  I think Barack’s rolling with Roberts’ colossal misstep bodes confidence for his handling future “mistakes”.

The speech was crafted with Kennedy, Lincoln and FDR overtones and was delivered with a masterful balance of force and feeling.  It was a speech that expertly addressed both the pain and the proposed symptom cures.  Forget the nation’s expectations.  Forget Black American’s expectations.  Forget non-black American’s expectations.  Malia’s words delivered to her father atop the steps of the Lincoln Memorial last weekend were, “First African-American President.  Better be good!”

The media nearly immediately fed us the line, “not a Home Run acceptance speech” which I will comment on in a separate blog.  “He got millions there,” one commentator aptly retorted.  Malia beamed.  Even my father, a right-wing Christian fundamentalist, who surely has voted Republican every election including this one, uttered “good job” immediately after Obama uttered, “God bless the United States of America.”  I was so moved and relieved—THAT gave me hope right there in my own living room!  A `Morrison microcosm’ of hope over fear that regardless of whomever we campaigned or voted for, we can indeed put aside our differences and come together as one nation under God.

About 20 minutes into the exam cramping – You have the same type according to Dr. starts stripping membranes in the last weeks of pregnancy. When I got home, I minor bleeding. Cramping is still ongoing and my hips sore. Take 4 MOTRIN every 6 hours. Help a little, but not removed. I 32 years old and have three children and my tubes tied May 7 Anyone who has experienced the same? enlarged uterus and cramps and pain after the test? The result? Thanks!

I always felt a cramp and bleed a little slurry of i (cramp is worse than my bleeding). My doctor told me it is normal to happen. Mine is not enlarged, but is inclined and had two sons.

hip pain post pregnancy
Obviously I’ve offended someone…?

I posted a question in another catagory that no one answered. So I then posted a link to that question asking for advive but I guess it offened people because it was removed. Sorry if you think I was “trolling”

This was the question…
I was always a stomach sleeper before I had a baby 6 months ago. I’ll go to sleep on my back but wake in pain on my stomach. My lower back and hips lock up and I can’t move. It takes everything I’ve got to roll over. Then for the rest of the day my back is in horrible pain. It makes no sense to me why my back would and hips would hurt from laying on my stomach. I’m figuring this has something to do with the pregnancy but I’m not for sure. What can I do to help keep this from happening? (I do excrise) Should I see a ciropractor? I miss sleeping on my tummy…

So, if someone could please help me out I’d apperciate it. Thanks

I suggest seeing a chiropractor. Pregnancy does some weird things to your body, some that never go away (my ribs “crack” near my breastbone).

Hip Displace?

My 2 year old Kane is so precious to me. He is a 115 pound rottweiller bullmastiff mix. I have read about the drugs and herbal supplements to help alleviate his pain. Does anyone have any opinions as to the best product(s) out there. I get such conflicting opinions from people who have used various methods and treatments. Please help poor Kane feel some relief..laceyemerill

There are a lot of options out there for hip dysplasia. The only “cure” for dysplasia is surgery, however there are several things you can do to manage the symptoms and give the dog a quality life. The problem is, not one of these things works well for every dog, which is probably why you are getting so many conflicting opinions. What works for one dog may not work well for another and vice versa.

The most important thing you can do to help relieve your dog’s pain is to keep him slim. It is better for a dog to be slightly underweight than slightly overweight and this is doubly true if the dog is known to have joint problems. Given his mix, 115lbs may not be too heavy for him but I couldn’t tell you for sure without actually seeing the dog. You should be able to feel his ribs easily through a thin layer of fat. Ask your vet or trainer about his weight and see if maybe he could afford to loose a few pounds.

Most vets are traditionally quick to prescribe pain medication and non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. They may recommend rimadyl, buffered asprin, deramaxx, metacam, or another similar drug. These drugs are often useful for treating acute pain, but the dog may need higher doses after being on these drugs longterm. These drugs are also known to have serious side effects such as ulcers, kidney and liver damage, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Because of the risk of these side effects, I think it is important to do blood tests before starting any of these treatments and to do annual or twice a year blood tests to screen for liver and kidney damage. I also think it is best to use these drugs as little as possible and using the lowest dose possible.

You can also supplement with things like glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM, fatty acids, and vitamin E. Many people have had wonderful success with glucosamine/chondroitin and/or glucosamine/MSM. Fatty acids and vitamin E have anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease pain (plus they are believed to contribute to the overall health of the immune system and skin as well). Another supplement that works wonders for many dogs is ester-C (vitamin C) which is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as assist in the maintenance of soft tissue. My own dogs do very well on glucosamine/chondroitin and ester-C. My GSD puppy used to limp and cry intermittently until we started the vit. C. His hips were x-rayed at one year and they weren’t great, but they didn’t look like we would need to do surgery as we had originally feared.

Personally I think it’s best to try a combination of traditional medicine and holistic/supplemental approach. Although I am fully aware of the potential negative side effects of NSAIDs, if your dog is in pain and they can offer relief from that pain and your dog’s bloodwork has shown that his system can handle them I see no reason not to use them…at least for short term pain management. I also think that if you can supplement the diet with things like glucosamine, fatty acids, and vitamins and that gives your dog relief you should try that as well. As I said before, the problem with hip dysplasia is that no treatment works well for all dogs. Adding supplements to the dogs diet may not work…but most of these supplements do not have any negative side effects so I think you might as well give them a try and see if they work for you.

hip pain in pregnancy
Hip joint pain and back pain in late pregnancy??

I’m 39 weeks pregnant and have had really bad back and hip pains the last two days. It got a little better last night so I was able to sleep for a little while but not long before it woke me up again. Do you think I could be getting close to going into labor? I’ve been having little contractions too but nothing to where I need to go into the Dr. or hospital. I’m so ready to have this baby!!

Sometimes labor can be felt in the back (“back labor”). You should go to the hospital / call your doctor immediately.

Pregnancy Pillows: What They Are & How To Use Them

The term pregnancy pillow can be used to describe a number of shapes and styles of pillows or sponge-like supports used by pregnant women during their pregnancy. They are even referred to as maternity pillows in some cases.

They can be as simple as a spongy wedge or a sausage shaped tube pillow as long as one’s body, or shaped like an “L,” “C,” or even “J,” depending on individual circumstances and preferences.  But whichever type of pregnancy pillow a mother-to-be selects, a pregnancy pillow is a great tool for making it easier to adjust to one’s changing body during this exciting time.

Pregnancy pillows help you sleep on your side during pregnancy

During pregnancy, sleeping on one’s stomach becomes impossible, and sleeping on one’s back is generally not recommended for the health of the baby, as it can restrict oxygen flow and create other potential problems. Sleeping on the left side is the suggested position by most doctors.

A few notes to be aware of:

  • This may be a new position for a mother-to-be, and a pregnancy pillow can help the woman in place while she sleeps by serving as a gentle barrier around her body.
  • Sleeping on one’s side can be painful to the hips and pelvis, especially if this is a new sleeping position. Pregnancy pillows provide support to the back, legs, and abdomen in a way that relieves this pressure and makes sleeping on one’s side as comfortable as possible.

Pregnancy pillows help relieve aches and pains

Many women suffer from a range of aches and pains during pregnancy as their body adjusts to the changes and additional weight.  Unfortunately many of these issues seem worse at night which may prevent women from getting the rest they need during pregnancy.

  • Pregnancy pillows are a great way to relieve back pain. Many women suffer from back pain during pregnancy as a result of the 25 to 55 pound weight gain; pregnancy pillows offer a comfortable position that allows those tense back muscles to relax, alleviating the pain immediately and lessening future pain.
  • Muscle aches and pains are also common in areas other than the back, as the growing baby puts more pressure on the mother’s organs and the additional weight strains her joints. Sleeping on a pregnancy pillow or even relaxing with one when watching television or reading can relieve the pressure felt by the body and ease the pain.

Extreme Hip Pain In Pregnancy

Monday, September 29th, 2008

35 weeks pregnant … asked this already, I have an answer?

I woke up this morning with extreme pain in both legs … my hips to toe … I almost feel like cramps in legs … and I do not know what that means. Anyone else ever experience? Is there anything I should worry? This is my pregnancy in April, I did never felt before. The pain disappeared in about an hour after I woke up. Oh, there was no swelling or anything … I have had the normal slight swelling of the feet, but nothing more.

I had this very bad with my second pregnancy. He is the baby pressing This is called sciatica (pronounced Siy-to-IC) of the nerve. Some people call siatica. This is what it is. There is nothing to worry. Try a different position from the bottom when it happens. Also try to straighten and bend your legs. Repeat over and over again and can be useful. It should disappear after having the baby. Again, this is nothing to worry about. I would like Tell your doctor if, because you may have good ideas for releaving pain.
