hip pain from back surgery
Intense pain and breathing difficulty from scoliosis surgery 23 years ago?

My cousin had her spine broken and reset along a metal rod and her hip and shoulder blade moved into alignment when she was 12 because the scoliosis was so severe there was a risk of death. She has been fine until the last three years when she started having pains in her chest, ribs and back. This has been diagnosed as chest infections and hiatus hernia but the latest xray shows the rod is squashing her lungs and the GP said the only thing for it was pain killers. She is really worried cos the pain is so intense at times she can’t bear it. Has anyone else had experience of this? Any advice? Can anyone give me any links to this happening and how people have been treated?
Thank you, Black cat! I emailed my cousin your answer. That is very interesting. She says the pain is like having someone sit on her chest and punch her in the back. The thing she most fears is feeling like she can’t breathe – and she really can’t, she’s been given a pump. Does that sound familiar to you?

Hello i too had surgery for scoliosis 24 years ago, i am in the UK if that makes any difference to any answer,i have a Harrington rod in my back and they have stopped using these now in the UK as they cause problems to the patient,so as it was 23 years ago i assume she has the Harrington rod too,my back was severe and i had a double curvature(and still have)and i almost died from complications days after it,

when you say severe pains what sort are they, sharp or dull,if sharp it suggests nerve pain if so the rod may well have moved and is touching a nerve which can cause extreme agony,i have had the nerve pains myself in the past around 4 years ago, scoliosis surgery often causes problems later on,

i find it strange she has been told only pain killers can help, after all it is 2010 has she been seen by a consultant or just her GP? she may need to have the rod removed and replaced with a new modern version, as i say i heard they no longer use Harrington’s for this very reason they can cause problems later on,

so i wouldn’t settle for that answer of course something can be done, its not normal to be left in pains that is so bad,my rod moved once and came away from the bone it too was the dreaded Harrington, sorry i don’t have more detailed answer but i can give a link for scoliosis support,

its a site to ask answer and and chat with others who have scoliosis from all over the world,it is here i got the information that Harrington rods are no longer used in the UK i learnt quite a bit so they may be able to help further,

http://www.scoliosis-support.org

but whatever dont give in and dont settle for nothing cant be done, hope she gets this sorted and soon.

ADDED EXTRA:Her symptoms sound scary and they turn around and tell her they cant do anything,i had some problems in the past with bad pains and i couldnt breathe properly, as when i breathed in the pain got stronger,i felt like i was under water my pains where sharp and dull at the same time,it turned out to be a nerve being touched or pinched at some point by the rod, there was talk of another operation but it calmed down on its own, but at times i do get the wave of pains and the same sensation come over me but have told no one because i dont want more surgery after the complications i had the last time,so it could be a nerve thats getting touched or pinched for her that causes these symptoms,as depending on what nerve is affected gives different symptoms and for her its affects her breathing,as every nerve in our spinal column has a job to do and breathing is one of them,so thats what makes me think of a nerve being affected,so in turn affects her breathing and something can be done about that, doctors often try to brush us off, and just sending her away with a pump and painkillers is not on she needs to get to the bottom of it and treat the problem and not the symptoms, not sure if i am of any help i have tried to explain things my way about the nerve pains,i have had that happen to me and still does at times, it makes me feel like i am suffocating so i know how she feels.

arthritis and joint pain pet causes

Your dog or cat suffering from arthritis? We believe that arthritis and joint pain, according to the condition human, but dogs are also common. Did you know that 60 million Americans suffer from arthritis dogs? If you notice something off alone with her dog, but do not know exactly what could be the cause, here are some common symptoms of the animals of joint pain:

* Reluctance to walk, climb stairs, jump or

* Lameness

* Late in the horizon

Difficulty getting out of a position rest

* Cries of pain to the touch and resistant to being touched

* A change in personality due to pain

There are several medical conditions they may pose to the joint pain of Fido. Check out some of these descriptions to identify which best suits your pet's illness.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic, slowly progressive condition that is caused by the degradation and destruction your pet's cartilage. As this occurs, the bony structures begin to rub against each other causing pain and discomfort.

degenerative joint disease implies a breakdown or destruction of parts of the joint, usually cartilage. As in the case of osteoarthritis, this condition does not necessarily mean that your pet has a problem inflammation.

Hip dysplasia is a malformation characterized by the "ball and joint" socket in your animal. As expected, this combination of ill-fitting causes a series of complications. In this case, chronic inflammation is common, calcium deposits occur, no pain and muscle tissue in the surrounding areas began to decay.

Elbow dysplasia is a disease like that is usually inherited and most often in large breed dogs. Bones become malformed results and generally in "Bonechips" which are very painful. In general, your pet will have limp when suffering from this condition.

Knee dysplasia is also characterized by malformed bones and bone chips. It is painful and often avoided the animal is lame and / or disease progression of lameness.

The knee joint typically involves torn knee ligaments, causing joint instability. The dislocation of the joint (knee) is also a problem. Inflammation is common since this is a city that is subject to much stress and tension. In most cases it is the result of poor breeding.

Osteochondrosis is a condition that is in front of a health problem that results poor breeding. Or a poor diet can also cause this condition (two factors may be involved.) It is characterized by cartilage deterioration and tissue generally both inflamed and painful.

Hypertrophic involves excessive growth of bone and / or "push" themselves together. In such situations, the animal usually knows a lot of pain.

degeneration of the shoulder is usually a multifactorial situation to make a clear cause difficult to isolate. An unstable joint osteochondrosis or even trauma may be the cause or perhaps a combination of factors.

If one or more of these conditions seem to be affecting your dog be sure to consult your veterinarian. classic dog and cat pain involves a common routine that is very similar to those proposed for humans, including changes in diet, regular exercise and the incorporation of taking anti-inflammatory to relieve swelling and pain.

Over the counter medications like aspirin can deaden the pain, but do nothing to address your pet's arthritis. Possible side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, nausea and cramps. ethnovets may recommend requirements for steroid medication. However, due to the many potential side effects of these drugs, including problems in the liver and kidney, vomiting, ulcers and excessive urination, more and more pet owners are turning to the community natural dog care. Studies show that natural resources can be as effective as prescription medications to relieve muscle and joint pain, without side effects potential of these drugs based on chemicals.

hip pain burning pain
I have a radiating pain in his lower back around the hip to the knee. Chiro and massage did not help.?

Chiro says my hip is expelled. Therapist says I have huge knots deep buttocks around the side of the sacrum. He had dislocated hips and sacrum before but this is entirely different from the pain. No help at any position. Burning! Laying walking, standing, all bad. Never before recording. What could be?

I can assure you that you have Sciatica … It is very painful … I 10 years. With the history you have, it may be advantageous for you to see a neurosurgeon or a neurologist for an EMG (nerve study) is identify the problem a little better. Sometimes, chiropractic and massage can help, but it does little to nothing for some people. The only thing I've found me back (And I've been pain free for over three years) has been DLI therapy. You can see more details here: http://www.iddtherapy.com/ The only way not to receive this treatment if you have had cancer or any other type of invasive surgery of the spine (epidural not resist). Sounds too good to be true, but it works really! I hope you can find a solution that works for you. For now, take the ibuprofen every 4 hours for pain … that will help more than anything else. Good luck!

hip pain post pregnancy
Obviously I’ve offended someone…?

I posted a question in another catagory that no one answered. So I then posted a link to that question asking for advive but I guess it offened people because it was removed. Sorry if you think I was “trolling”

This was the question…
I was always a stomach sleeper before I had a baby 6 months ago. I’ll go to sleep on my back but wake in pain on my stomach. My lower back and hips lock up and I can’t move. It takes everything I’ve got to roll over. Then for the rest of the day my back is in horrible pain. It makes no sense to me why my back would and hips would hurt from laying on my stomach. I’m figuring this has something to do with the pregnancy but I’m not for sure. What can I do to help keep this from happening? (I do excrise) Should I see a ciropractor? I miss sleeping on my tummy…

So, if someone could please help me out I’d apperciate it. Thanks

I suggest seeing a chiropractor. Pregnancy does some weird things to your body, some that never go away (my ribs “crack” near my breastbone).

Hip Displace?

My 2 year old Kane is so precious to me. He is a 115 pound rottweiller bullmastiff mix. I have read about the drugs and herbal supplements to help alleviate his pain. Does anyone have any opinions as to the best product(s) out there. I get such conflicting opinions from people who have used various methods and treatments. Please help poor Kane feel some relief..laceyemerill

There are a lot of options out there for hip dysplasia. The only “cure” for dysplasia is surgery, however there are several things you can do to manage the symptoms and give the dog a quality life. The problem is, not one of these things works well for every dog, which is probably why you are getting so many conflicting opinions. What works for one dog may not work well for another and vice versa.

The most important thing you can do to help relieve your dog’s pain is to keep him slim. It is better for a dog to be slightly underweight than slightly overweight and this is doubly true if the dog is known to have joint problems. Given his mix, 115lbs may not be too heavy for him but I couldn’t tell you for sure without actually seeing the dog. You should be able to feel his ribs easily through a thin layer of fat. Ask your vet or trainer about his weight and see if maybe he could afford to loose a few pounds.

Most vets are traditionally quick to prescribe pain medication and non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. They may recommend rimadyl, buffered asprin, deramaxx, metacam, or another similar drug. These drugs are often useful for treating acute pain, but the dog may need higher doses after being on these drugs longterm. These drugs are also known to have serious side effects such as ulcers, kidney and liver damage, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Because of the risk of these side effects, I think it is important to do blood tests before starting any of these treatments and to do annual or twice a year blood tests to screen for liver and kidney damage. I also think it is best to use these drugs as little as possible and using the lowest dose possible.

You can also supplement with things like glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM, fatty acids, and vitamin E. Many people have had wonderful success with glucosamine/chondroitin and/or glucosamine/MSM. Fatty acids and vitamin E have anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease pain (plus they are believed to contribute to the overall health of the immune system and skin as well). Another supplement that works wonders for many dogs is ester-C (vitamin C) which is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as assist in the maintenance of soft tissue. My own dogs do very well on glucosamine/chondroitin and ester-C. My GSD puppy used to limp and cry intermittently until we started the vit. C. His hips were x-rayed at one year and they weren’t great, but they didn’t look like we would need to do surgery as we had originally feared.

Personally I think it’s best to try a combination of traditional medicine and holistic/supplemental approach. Although I am fully aware of the potential negative side effects of NSAIDs, if your dog is in pain and they can offer relief from that pain and your dog’s bloodwork has shown that his system can handle them I see no reason not to use them…at least for short term pain management. I also think that if you can supplement the diet with things like glucosamine, fatty acids, and vitamins and that gives your dog relief you should try that as well. As I said before, the problem with hip dysplasia is that no treatment works well for all dogs. Adding supplements to the dogs diet may not work…but most of these supplements do not have any negative side effects so I think you might as well give them a try and see if they work for you.

Hip Pain Pregnancy

hip pain pregnancy
Is hip pain normal during pregnancy? Twin pregnancy?

I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant with twins. For the last week my hips have been really bothering me. I wake up at night with excrutiating pain in my hips. I change my position and then I wake up feeling the same way a little while later. During the day it’s not quite as bad but it’s still there. Some days it causes me to shuffle/walk in a weird way to minimize the pain. Anybody else experience this?

I did!! IT was horrible! It took me a lot of time to find out what it was. Pubis Symphysis Dysfunction. My doctor didn’t really believe in it so I suffered throughout 2 pregnancies. I’m in my 3rd now and I’m not even 3 months yet and already having pain and trouble walking and sleeping. You should try to talk to your Dr. about it. It helps to wear a pelvic support belt. Google it and find out what you can on it since if you’re planning on having a vaginal birth it will matter, that is if that’s what you have.
Good luck.

Hip Pain Pregnancy Relief

hip pain pregnancy relief

Round Ligament Pain

Round ligament pain can be a scary thing the first time you experience it.  It is characterized by sharp pain that radiates in the abdominal, hip or groin area.  This pain can can be on one side or both sides.  Though it can be alarming, as it is quite sharp, round ligament pain should not create cause for concern.

This type of pelvic pain is caused by stretching or spasm in the round ligaments.  The round ligament’s role is to help support the uterus.  During pregnancy, the expansion of the uterus is enormous.  This places a great deal of strain on the round ligaments as well as other uterine ligaments.  As your uterus grows these ligaments can become over stretched or spasm, causing sudden sharp pelvic pain.

Pregnant women often worry that this acute pain indicates a severe problem.  Your mind races fearing that something is wrong with the baby, or that you have appendicitis or some other serious condition.  Generally, this is not the case.

Do be alert, however, if you are having fever, chills, painful urination, difficulty walking, or bleeding.  These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition.

Round ligament pain is generally brief in duration, causing fast, sharp twinges that are short-lived.  These pains may be recurring, but the duration of the pain is short.  Sudden movements such as coughing, sneezing or laughing activate these muscles and can be painful.

Changing positions too quickly can also result in these sharp, shooting pains.   This type of pain frequently occurs in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

If you are suffering with round ligament pain, you may be able to get relief by bringing your knees up toward your chest.  This will take some of the strain off of your over-stretched and spasming ligaments.  If that does not provide relief, try lying on the side opposite the pain.  You may also find it comforting to take a warm bath, or apply warm compresses to the painful area.

Try not to sit or stand for extended periods of time.  Staying in one position for too long may aggravate the pain or allow it to occur more frequently.  It is important to move more slowly.  When you are changing to a sitting position, sit down slowly and gradually.  The same is true for when you are rising from a sitting position, get up slowly.  This will help decrease spasms and pain.  Slowing down your movements will allow your body more time to transition comfortably.

If you feel a sneeze or cough coming on, or if you are going to laugh, try to bring your knees up toward your chest a little bit.  This could help prevent the pain from beginning.

It is not unusual for round ligament pain to be problematic until your baby is born.  In rare cases, round ligament pain may ease on its own. While it is certainly a discomfort, it is not a permanent condition.  Once your baby is born, this pain should disappear completely.

It may be helpful to use gentle fascial stretching pregnancy pain relief techniques.

Performing regular exercise and stretching can be valuable in keeping your body loose and more comfortable.  Prenatal yoga is an excellent exercise for pregnancy that will help to gently stretch your body and may prevent a variety of pains.

Use of a pregnancy pillow may help take the strain off of your ligaments at night.  If you do not have a pregnancy pillow, try placing a pillow between your knees and under your belly for extra support.  These small things may go a long way for alleviating discomfort.

The use of a pregnancy support belt may also be helpful.

Hip Pain From Exercise

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

hip pain from exercise
My muscles on the side right above the hip bone hurts from doing crunches and inverted chin ups. Hernia?

It is not like a sore pain from a workout. It is a deep dull pain. On both sides but especially on the right side. Would there ever be a danger of developing a hernia from these exercises?
It is not my abs. It is this specific muscle. i repeat. It is not my abs.

From a physiological standpoint, you should probably get it checked. On the “most likely” scale, it sounds like your hip flexor muscle is overworked on that side. I’m guessing that you’re right-handed. Most right-hand dominant people are also right-leg dominant, meaning that your first step from starting is almost always on the right leg first, and you tend to land a little harder on that side. This may also transmit pain to the low back. Crunches on the floor don’t usually aggravate the problem, but the inverted chin-ups probably do. Most ab excercises that use a large range of motion have a great deal of hip flexor involvement – sit-ups being on of the worst. Try substituting cable crunches for the inverteds. Do them in a kneeling position, with heavy weight, and make sure your feet are ON your heels the whole time. It will take the hip flexors out of the exercise. Anatomically speaking, they are on of the most over tightened of all muscles. Be sure to stretch them after your ab workouts. Doing the “kneeling lunge” to stretch the front of the hip should hit it.

What human pain medication can i give to my dog for pain relief?

My dog has been limping lately and i think it’s her hip. i haven’t taken her to the vet yet. Do you know any pain relievers that are safe to give to my dog?

Lightbulb is wrong. Aspirin is o.k., not Ibuprophen. I actually killed my daughter’s dog with ibuprophen.

Hip Pain Burning

hip pain burning
I have pain shooting from hip and down the Right leg that feels like stinging/burning Pain?

I was injured at work and sent to their doctors and dont have the opportunity to see my own doctor over this injury. They are trying to tell me it is all in my head and I only have a sprained lumbar. I went to see a specialist and paid for it on my own and he said I had 4 herniated disc and hip displacement and sciatic nerve. Works doctors are extremely rude and are not offering treatment and are trying to mask it with medication. I asked the first doctor to send me to a chiropractor or sports medicine doctor for treatment and they said they will not refer me to a quack and chiropractors are bad. Instead they refered me to a ortho specialist. When I saw him he rudely asked what is supposed to be wrong with you? I was in awe. I started to explain. He replied ya ya ya. What company u with? I told him oh so their the bad guys. What? I was suppose to see him because he knows what he is doing instead he treated me with disrepect. What can i do in the meantime to help the pain?

Welcome to the frustrating and nasty world of back injuries and Insurance Quacks!!!!

Sounds like you are really getting the worst of the worst.
The only thing that I heard in this that they said right is to stay away from Chiropractors!!!!

Now, lets help you……When you saw your paid specialist, I assume that he gave you a MRI to determine your injuries, which are severe and considered an emergency in the real world, by the way. You need to get copies of that MRI and head straight back to your “work doctors”, do not let them try to wiggle out of anything that they have done to you, because you are in pain and you have a Sciatic Nerve that needs relief or it is going to be permanently damaged!!! Once they have looked at the MRI, you let them know that you want an Emergency appointment with a NEUROSURGEON, and if you are not on any pain medication tell them you want the appropriate medication for you pain ASAP.
If……they do not respect your wishes (they are supposed to be working for you, actually) you will have to have a plan B.

Plan B: You are going to have to fight back, even if you don’t feel like you have any fight in you. or you are not usually a fighter. (if you aren’t a fighter they will eat you alive, unfortunetly) You’ll need to find a GOOD, well respected Injury Attorney, no one that advertises on the Television, a real one. Money shouldn’t be an issue, because they usually work off of your settlement. By the way, with your injuries, you could also end up disabled especially if they are not addressed. You aren’t suing them for money at this point you are suing for medical attention. If by chance you are in a Union, then their attys. would be perfect.

You don’t deserve this treatment, and ever since the government started cracking down on Doctors concerning the distrabution of Pain Medication , people with Back problems are treated horrible, because these doctors are so parinoid that you are faking. Well, you have a MRI that proves differently and the poor treatment should have stopped there.
The reason that I know about this is because I am now disabled from being prevented treatment when I had a herniated disc that pressed my Sciatic Nerve so bad that the nerve is damaged clear to my big toe and will never totally heal. It was almost 2 years before I was able to have the operation that I needed and by then I was almost Insane with pain and frustration. No exageration!

I am so upset for you I can’t even remember if there is anything else I should tell you. Other than Don’t let anyone touch you at this point other than a Neurosurgeon and youl simply cannot play these peoples game, you must get treatment. With a MRI sitting infront of them they will/should be hard pressed not to treat you properly. Unfortunetly you may have to threaten them and involve an attorney, but you have to do whats best in order not to be disabled for the rest of your life. That shouldn’t be what doctors do, they are supposed to be helping.
Good Luck, if you have any questions because i probably didn’t make total sense I’m so mad feel free to email me.

Lower Back And Hip Pain, Important Information You Need To Know

Having lower back and hip pain now a days seems very common. At least four out of five people will have it at some point in their life. Some people tend to have more symptoms than others and some factors are controllable, while others are not. Educating yourself more about lower back and hip pain is the first step towards being pain free.

The Three Categories Of Lower Back And Hip Pain

The three categories of lower back and hip pain are determined depending on how long your pain lasts and how often it occures. If the pain lasts less than three months, it is referred to as acute. Most back pain is of this type. It is easy to deal with and there is no need for a doctors care. Get yourself a few days of bed rest, then back on your feet and work through the pain. Exercise will assist with working out the pain, as will analgesics.

Some people suffer from recurring acute pain. While it is bothersome and frustrating to have the pain return, if you treat it carefully as before, it should go away again, hopefully forever this time.

If you have lower back and hip pain last longer than three months, and you are in pain most of the time, then you have what is known as chronic back pain. It is advisable that you talk to your primary care physician, or try an alternative method, such as chiropractic care or acupuncture. Be sure to find a qualified professional, as you do not want to aggravate the problem!

Hip and lower back pain during pregnancy changes the rules. Pregnant women can have backaches off and on throughout their pregnancy, primarily due to the growing uterus and straining ligaments. But once the baby is delivered, the back pain should ease.

Likely Causes?

There can be many causes to lower back and hip pain. The most common cause being muscle strain, sciatica, an uneven pelvis or even one leg shorter than the other. You could have flat feet, or you even have very weak muscles that do not do an adequate job of protecting your spine. There are also other things that can cause lower back and hip pain.

Piriformis Syndrome: What Is It?

Piriformis syndrome is an inflammation in the piriformis muscle. This muscle is found very deep within the buttock, and it is the muscle that helps our hips to rotate. If there is tightness in the hamstring, the piriformis can become inflamed and sore, even to the outside back section of the buttock. It can swell and put pressure and inflammation on the sciatic nerve too, causing sciatica. Sitting can also aggravate this situation.

To relieve the lower back and hip pain and swelling, it is wise to use ice (wrapped in a towel for twenty minutes, several times a day). Taking an anti-inflammatory medicine will also help, if you do not mind taking a drug to ease matters. If touch is tolerable, massage the muscle deep into the tissues. Also strengthen and stretch out the hip area, using exercises targeting the hip, lower back and hamstring muscles.
