hip replacement operations waiting list
What is the fastest way to get a hip replacement in Australia?

My uncle has recently said he needs a hip. It has been said that there is February 1-year wait to join the waiting list for the public, and then again wait for surgery (who lives in Melbourne) now has joined private health and would wait 11 months before they will pay for the operation. He is in agony and can barely walk or drive your car. He panadine strong but this does not really help (although it takes 3-4 at a time). What are the wait times interstate? Is it possible to make the states of operation? (I live in South Africa).

Has the "medical tourism"? Some uninsured Americans traveling abroad were expensive procedures physicians as joint replacements for a fraction of the cost at home. If desperate, you might consider India or Thailand. Bilateral Hip Replacements

I admit it. Before the demise of my hips and their cartilage, I wasn’t quite sure what bilateral meant. I always just assumed that it had something to do with lying next to a man who wasn’t out of the closet yet or maybe a different type of lens for your bifocals. But worse than this, I didn’t care to know. Put it this way, I was more than willing to go to the grave without ever having uttered, let alone discuss the implications of the word bilateral. For the two people out there who can relate to this ignorance? Bilateral means both sides.

In the world of hip replacements, otherwise known as THRs, bilateral means you’ve had two new hips installed. Often, once one hip deteriorates, the other soon follows. It makes sense. In my case I had hip dysplasia, a word every dog lover knows. And even though I am a bit further up the food chain, my hips were shallow in their sockets and lasted about the same length as a purebred German shepherd. Before I turned 44, my athletic lifestyle had pounded away all of the catelage in my right hip. In half a year I was hobbling as I walked. In two more months I couldn’t sleep due to radiating pain. Hips are known to cause crippling pain. They also come in pairs. So, having such miraculous relief from my first hip pain made my second THR decision easy. Two years later, the hip that had always LOOKED worse on the x-rays but that had never caused me any problems (go figure. brains have a funny way of dealing with pain. WIthin six months I was back to my gimping gait and sleepless nights. I waited until my one remaining hip started keeping me awake all night and the next day I booked my surgery. Some people agonize a lot more over whether to do it or not. Once you have one THR and feel the fabulous effects, it’s easy to go bilateral, baby. Often my spinning students call me the Bionic Woman but I just smile and tell them my preferred name. I tell them that I’d rather be called the bilateral woman. So if you are under forty years old and your active lifestyle is being affected by hip pain, don’t worry anymore. Find a doctor who has a great reputation and who does THRs all day, every day and make your appointment today. Time to get back to your workout routine.

hip replacement chairs
Hip popping out of place. I had RT hip replacement 6 mos ago.?

For the past week or so my hip keeps “popping” out of place like getting up from a chair, leaning over while sitting and what would be “normal” movements. This morning I leaned over & got stuck, someone had to literally straighten me back in an upright position which caused a loud pop. This is not painful, just keeps me afraid of moving.

Like I said, this is 6 mos post op. Is this normal for people for people with a hip replacement?

I’ve had both hips replaced. You may have a tendon that is snapping but your hip is not dislocating (if your hip actually dislocates, you and everyone around you would know it and it would be followed by an ambulance ride to the emergency room, pain meds, closed reduction (hopefully) of the joint and crutches, restrictions & precautions just like those you had right after your THR for a few weeks). Do it too often and it may call for revision surgery because your joint is too unstable.
Do run this by your ortho surgeon however and get his/her take on the popping.

latest hip replacement technology

Since my Mom’s partial hip replacement surgery in late July she has reverted to her default position when she experiences tough times in various forms-”I want to die.” “You know what I want. I want to be dead,” is her mantra. In response, I have used words to encourage her to want to live. I offer her something to look forward to, such as returning to her day enrichment program. I tell her that God will call her when he’s ready for her to help all the people he has close and for now God wants her to help all the people who are alive. Indeed, when Mom is less depressed she only thinks about helping others. After seven days of our ping pong game of engagement, I realized I was hitting my head against the brick wall of resistance.

How was my resistance to hearing Mom’s mantra serving her or myself? The exchange only reinforced each of our positions, mentally, emotionally and physically. I was not meeting her where she was. We did not connect as well as usual.

For years as an organizational change consultant I worked with groups that were steeped in resistance to leadership change or technology change. Recognizing that resistance, naming it, spending time with it, exploring its benefits and costs and embracing it were essential to moving through it and forward to acceptance of the new leadership team and new technologies in the workplace.

Resistance is often more easily recognized when working with individuals than with groups, and is such a valuable place from which to get traction. In helping business coaching and personal coaching clients master the art of thriving in tough times, resistance appears early on in the coaching relationship.

After a week together with Mom, I was gob-smacked when I recognized I was operating from full on resistance. Here is what I did and the results.

  • Action-After she repeated her mantra the night of my recognition, I said, “Yes. That is how you feel. I have been responding to you from my perspective. I don’t have your perspective and don’t have your life experiences. I understand and accept as best I can from your perspective.”
  • Outcome-I could feel her upper body relaxing, her voice was a bit fuller and I sensed she was calmer. So was I.

Tip
: Pay attention to when you find yourself working to persuade someone or influence someone rather than easily engaging in a conversation. Notice if your body is a bit tight from the waist up. Check in with yourself to discover if there is a pattern that resembles hitting your head against a brick wall. Experiencing any of these is a sign of resistance.

I would love to learn about your brick wall resistance stories. Please share at http://www.right-line.com/blog.

How many X Walmart employees hurt on job?

How many Walmart employees hurt on the job and having trouble getting the company to pay the medical bills? Was badly hurt on the job, got a crapy attorney that was taking a partial from the small workmans comp checks each month and did nothing. Went to an ambudsman who did more in one week than the attorney did in one year. Walmart fired me for not being able to return to work and stopped the checks. I have paid $12,000 out of pocket to get some of the medical bills paid.

Need a left hip replacements, both knees replaced, and back surgery. Wood pallets loaded with industrial shelves fell on me on Easter Sunday 2007.

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. No on should have to go through that. At least the ombudsman was able to make some progress on your case.

Although I’ve never been injured at work, I know many people that have been. They’ve expressed their frustration over the whole work comp process. There is no way to fix a broken system like this. The best thing to do is work with the adjuster and as a last resort, proceed with litigation and set the matter for a hearing.

Good luck

hip replacement alternatives
my question is about hip replacement versus hip resufacing?

I’m 46 and my doctor is telling me i need my right hip replaced. He says normally your too young but since the pain is severe and there’s no cartilage left he can recommend it be done. He’s in favor of replacement over resurfacing because it last longer but i’m thinking resurfacing might buy me some time incase there’s a better alternative down the road.Has anyone had hip resurfacing and how did it work out.what made you decide this way.thankyou for your input.

The links below offer you some information that you could use in your decision:

Hip Replacement Info Personal

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Anyone have a story about bone spurs, arthritis and/or hip replacement to share?

I’ve had osteoarthritis for some time now, but just found out that I have bone spurs on my left hip joint! I went online to research it and found that the usual treatment is TRH (Total Hip Replacement)! I’m sweating bullets…I’m still middle-aged and NOT ready for walkers, canes, personal care attendants, much less what one guy described on his website as “violent surgery”!!! I still don’t have all the info, but would like to get some personal feedback, to add to the doctors’ “sweet-talk”, ya know?

I’ve had both of my hips replaced in separate surgeries at age 59. The reason: osteoarthritis. I had bone spurs, bone cysts, the whole ball of wax. The walker only lasts for a few weeks (I used a pair of forearm crutches as an alternative during that time.). I had no “personal care attendant” except my husband. They pretty much taught me to be independent right away while I was in the hospital. I learned to dress and undress myself and bathe myself. I couldn’t drive for about 5-6 weeks so I needed someone to drive me and run errands during that time.
I’m so happy with my fake hips that I can’t help but give you more “sweet talk”. I was at the point where I couldn’t take a step without a cane and was headed for life in a wheelchair. So it is not surprising that I now consider this surgery as sort of a miracle surgery. I can now walk miles, have no limp, no pain, use no walking aids and take no pain meds. In short I have my life back.

My best advice: do your own research, find a surgeon with lots of hip replacements under his belt that you trust and go for it. Good luck to you.
