Total Hip Replacement Precautions

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

What is a reasonable amount of time to wait have sexual intercourse after total hip replacement surgery?

I had the surgery June 1, 2010 and thus far I have been following the doctor’s precautions and instructions. Sex has not really been a big deal because my husband has been on a tour. Now he is soon expected to be home and my anxiety is rising because of such. The doctor’s still say no sex and I think that my body may agree, according to my ability to freely move it around and the lack of some range of motion. The problem is that my mind and emotions say something totally opposite. I guess the real question is has everything efficiently healed to the point that I won’t hurt myself or cause any setbacks if I am extremely careful, right?

I just had a total hip joint replacement 6 weeks ago. And although my surgery was less invasive, an anterior cut, and recovery is 6-8 weeks instead of the usual 3 months, I am wary about moving in such a way as to have a possible dislocation. It takes many months to get your range of motion back. I would follow your doctor’s limits on your activities. Perhaps you can try alternate love making activities that do not affect your hip at all. Don’t do anything you are not feeling good about. Take care.

total hip replacement fracture
Hip fracture/replacement question???

Because of a recent hip fracture I have been told that I will eventually need total hip replacement does anyone know if this is avoidable or is this something I will have to accept.

Hip replacement is elective surgery in that it usually isn’t done on an emergency basis and the patient has time to plan and prepare for it. I have had both hips replaced because I developed osteoarthritis (the most common indication for hip replacement). The surgery really does work and works very well. The recovery and rehab can seem long but once you get to the point where you can walk well, without a walking aid, pain free, and need no pain meds, it all seems worth it. I doubt that any doctor would tell you that hip replacement was avoidable for you. You can always say “no” but you do so at the peril of ending up in a wheel chair, eating pain meds and having no life.l I was almost there before I got the message. I’m so glad I had the surgeries. I’m a different person now and am much more active than I was for years before the surgery.

hip pain walking when
Sudden left hip pain when walking?

Yesterday night, i went to the gym, and rain o the treadmill/jog/walked/ and speed intervals for about an hour, did some weights and went home. i sat down for a bit, and when i got up, i could barely walk, there was a pain, like pulling, every time i extended/used my left leg to walk. I just limped around the house that night. The pain hurt alot also while going up the stairs, it seemed like if there was any weight on my left leg alone, the hip would start thrashing.
This morning, the pain is way less than it was last night, but i can still feel it when i walk, so i still have a minor limp.
Does anyone know the cause of this? Why it just of now started happening? i havent done speed intervals in a while, and im thinking that might have something to do with it, like over working that muscle.
What can i do to heal it up/stop the pain? just time?
any info on this, is this normal?
thanks alot!

Sounds like you pulled a muscle. They call this getting OLD, lol. My guess would be your approaching 30. If so you are probably less active than in you high school or college days. Inactivity cases muscle atrophy and weakness.

This than leads to injury when the body cant handle stress like it use to. Remember to warm up and cool down with extra stretching. When injuries occur:

The Golden Rule is Ice for 15 minutes every 2 hours for the first 2 days following acute injury to decrease inflamation. The third day follow with heat to increase circulation and promote healing.

Pain is a warning signal from your body that there has been an injury and the body is under construction. Any movement that causes pain could further damage the areas involved. Drink lots of water.

Acupuncture is great with pain. They even have patches now. Like little bandaids that make pain go away within minutes and sometimes even seconds.

DePuy Lawsuits Filed After DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Recall

Despite lawsuits being filed concerning the DePuy Hip Replacement system, some patients who received a hip implant made by DePuy Orthopaedics say they have been told they are responsible for the revision surgeries. The DePuy hip recall was announced in August 2010 and affected approximately 93,000 DePuy hip replacement units.

Since the DePuy hip recall was announced, lawsuits have been filed against DePuy Orthopaedics, alleging that the DePuy hip implants—specifically the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System—were defectively designed. The recall was announced after it was discovered that the DePuy Orthopaedics implants had a high failure rate.

That failure rate of the DePuy ASR hip replacement has resulted in patients requiring hip revision surgery to replace the allegedly defective implant–and that, in turn, has resulted in DePuy hip lawsuits.

According to NBC Chicago (10/28/10), DePuy Orthopaedics told patients that they should have Medicare or private insurance companies pay for the hip revision surgery, even though the product was recalled due to a high failure rate.

One DePuy hip replacement patient, Scotty MacGregor, whose story was reported by NBC Chicago (10/28/10), reportedly received an answer to her DePuy lawsuit that alleged she (MacGregor) was “negligent, careless and at fault” in her injuries, which “were not legally caused by the product at issue [the DePuy hip implant].” DePuy Orthopaedics then reportedly gave six possible reasons for the patient’s injuries including an allergic reaction and an unforeseeable illness. MacGregor had her initial hip replacement surgery two-and-a-half years ago.

Patients who must undergo hip revision surgery face not only complications of having a second surgery on their hips, but also time off work–if they still have remaining sick time available, additional hospital bills and at least two months of recovery time. Although most hip replacement devices are expected to last approximately 15 years, roughly 12 percent of patients who received the DePuy hip devices experienced failure within five years.

Meanwhile, a woman in Hawaii has filed a lawsuit after her ordeal with the DePuy Orthopaedic hip replacement. According to The Star-Advertiser (10/27/10), Jacqueline Lum (her last name is also reported as Lim) had her initial hip replacement surgery in August 2009 and started to feel pain about three months after that surgery.

One issue is that the metal-on-metal design of the DePuy ASR Hip replacement causes metal shavings to be released from the hip device and enter the patient’s surrounding tissue, causing a condition known as metallosis. That metallosis can cause damage to nearby bone and tissue, resulting in failure of the hip implant. A second problem is that the shallow design of the cup in the implant can result in the joint itself failing.

DePuy lawsuits have also been filed in Illinois and Indiana, alleging DePuy Orthopaedics knew about the risks associated with the DePuy hip devices but failed to warn about those risks.

Post Operative Hip Replacement Care

post operative hip replacement care

Unfortunately, old age and often arthritis catches up to our canine companions as easily as it does to us. You may notice your dog has trouble going up stairs or getting down from a car seat.

First, make sure this is not a disease or condition that can corrected surgically. If it’s chronic or the effects of aging, however, we can lessen the negative impacts with a few simple techniques.

1. Don’t let your dog get overweight. This is the most important thing you can do for him. Excess weight puts more pressure on his joints just as it does to you. Make sure you can feel his ribs and put him on a diet if need be.

2. Avoid activities that tax his joints. Never let a Toy breed jump down from a sofa (or anywhere) or jump up to catch something. Leave the Frisbees to Labradors and rely on walking or swimming for your pet’s exercise.

3. If Fido seems to be in pain, talk to your vet about using glucosamine. In the veterinary form, it is sold as Synoquin. However, the animal brand is very expensive compared to the generic brands that humans take.

Ask your vet about using the human version provided the tablets can be purchased or cut into a proper dosage for a small dog and have the quantity of glucosamine required.

Depending on the degree of pain your dog is suffering, a buffered aspirin may provide all the relief that’s needed.

If your dog is going lame, your vet my prescribe Rimadyl or Meloxicam for when he is stiff. These can be upset a dog’s stomach and are also expensive. Be sure to check the Internet veterinary pharmacies for prices.

4. Many dog owners try other natural, non-harmful treatments such as magnetic collars, acupuncture, massage, homeopathy and herbs. While I’ve heard anecdotal information on how well these work, I know of no scientific studies that support them.

That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t try one especially acupuncture. Ask for your vet or friends/breeders/trainer/groomer for recommendations of practitioners of these techniques.

5. Control his environment for his comfort. Make sure he sleeps on a warm, soft bed. Avoid cold, damp climates and over activity. If you have uncarpeted floors, beware of throw rugs and slippery areas where Fido can slide, twist and injure his hip.

6. As a last resort, consider a total hip replacement surgery (THR). In addition to the expense (up to $5,000), there is a lengthy recovery period which is often difficult for dogs and their owners and post-surgical checkups for the rest of your dog’s life.

Do the best you can to control your dog’s mobility problems and identify the least medication that relieves his pain. When that doesn’t work anymore, then consider some form of surgery.

Making Hip Hop Beats

Absolutely the most important part of making hip hop beats is the drum pattern. If you want to make beats you must learn how to program patterns correctly and make them interesting, memorable, and danceable. When making hip hop beats you need to understand what the different drum parts are and what they do. you probably already know what the snare is – it is the most prominent beat in the pattern. the bass drum keeps the rhythm of the melody and bass line and the hi hats keep the timing and add syncopation. these parts are the basics of a live drum kit. everything other drum part is usually used to add accenting and a little more flavor. The snare beat is an anchor point in the pattern, depending in the timing.  To simplify it, the snare beat is beat you would intuitively clap along to the pattern on. As an example, think of “In Da Club” by 50 Cent. This song actually uses a “clap” sound on the snare part, so that is an easy illustration.  The bass drum beat on the same song accents and follows the synthesizer horn hits. Listen to the “horn” sounding part and notice how the bass drum always hits on those notes too. This is a general rule but it goes a long way in making your hip hop beats match your melody and bass lines.  Also in this song, he hi hats are replaced with what sound like more of a shaker, equally breaking up the pattern on eighth and quietly on sixteenth notes. The hi hats can be opened or closed and on certain beats, they can eve be dropped out on certain notes, and used in a very non-steady, syncopated way to completely change what the beat sounds like.

hip replacement video
good exercise video?

Hi, I am looking for an exercise video that is kind to bad knees. I am not looking for a video that is for bad knees. I want a workout video to tone the whole body. I am 67, and 150 lbs. I have always been fit, but am finding it hard to button up shorts that I wore last year. I had a hip replacement a year ago, and have a knee that gives me trouble. I am hoping that there is someone out there that can clue me in on a good video to purchase. Hope so!! thanks

Maybe you can try Winsor Pilates–this will tone you up and it’s good for all ages and fitness levels, and it should be easy on your knees. If you want to lose a few extra pounds you’ll only get that by modifying your diet. If you eat more than what you burn (even if you exercise) you will gain weight and if you eat less than what you burn (even if you don’t exercise) you’ll still lose.
Try eating 1200 cals a day in a 50% protein/30% Good carbs like veggies and 20% fat (good fat from olive oil and flax etc). You can track all your calories on a free website called fitday.com.
No amount of exercise works without the proper diet.

Hip Replacement Treatment

hip replacement treatment
I had hip replacement in 2005. I came down with MRSA from the surgery.?

After months of IV treatment, the infection was still present. I had to have the hip replacement re-done. This surgeon was able to remove all the infection.

My question; will the MRSA creep up on me again? Also I still have alot of pain and stiffness from the surgery. How long will this last?

An MRSA (Multiple drug Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus infection) is extremely serious, as you found out the hard way, but it is an infection.

But with an artificial joint. you need to take a course of antibiotics before you have any dental work, in order to help to prevent a further infection around the artificial joint.

There are two reasons for this. First, the human mouth is very much a reservoir for all kinds of bacteria. IN fact, the human mouth is a much less healthy environment than is a dog or cat mouth. That’s why a human bite that breaks the skin absolutely requires medical attention. The second reason is that an artificial joint or any other implanted device will pretty much “draw” infection towards it. It’s already something that your body recognizes as “not-you”, and an infection will multiply that.

You’d be best to ask that question of your surgeon, though. And make certain that every one of your doctors, as well as your dentist, knows about your replaced hip. It factors into the ways that they can help you.

As to the pain and stiffness, it will probably last longer than it would have without the infection and subsequent further surgery, but exactly how long is an individual thing. Again, though, talk with your surgeon about it.

The most important part of all of this, though, is that you survived. My father had been hpspitalized for four months following a major stroke when an MDRSA was introduced to his ward. Everyone was put into isolation. He didn’t contract the bug, but he carried it. He survived the period, and survived the isolation. But he didn’t survive the psychologial effects of that extent of isolation, and stopped fighting, even after the isolation was lifted. He died of complications of his stroke (which itself was a complication of his diabetes) 9 days later. It wasn’t easy on any of us, and he is missed as much today as he was then, almost 10 years ago.

THR: –

prosthetic hip surgery total hip replacement. This town consists of two parts: the hip (acetabulum, a bone-shaped cut in the basin) and ball "or head of the thigh bone (femur). During surgery, these two parts of the hip is removed and replaced with smooth artificial surfaces.

The artificial socket is made of high density plastic, while the ball artificial with its stem is made of solid steel metal. These artificial pieces are implanted into the healthy parts of the pelvis and femur with bone cement (methacrylate methyl).

replacement of cement less total hip –

A hip replacement has been developed that do not require cement. This has the potential hip to allow the bones of it is an important consideration for the younger patient. In some cases, only one of the two components (socket or stem) can be set in cement and the other is less concrete. This is called "hip hybrid.

When is HRT?
total hip replacements is usually performed for severe arthritis. The operation is sometimes done for other problems such as hip fractures or aseptic necrosis (a condition in which bones of the hip ball dies). Most patients who have artificial hips are over 55 years, but the operation is sometimes performed in younger people. The circumstances vary, but generally patients are considered for total hip replacements if:

* The pain is severe enough to restrict not only work and recreation, but the ordinary activities of daily living.
* The pain is not relieved by arthritis (anti-inflammatory) medicine, use a cane, and restricting activities.
* Significant between the stiffness of the hip.
* X-rays show advanced arthritis or other problems.

What can we expect a total hip replacement?
A total hip replacement to relieve pain complete or nearly complete in 90-95 percent of patients. Allow patients to carry out many normal activities in everyday life. The artificial hip may allow return to sports or heavy work on the instructions of your doctor. Most patients with stiff hips before surgery is near normal movement, and almost all have improved motion.

What are the risks of HRT?

Blood clots in the leg *
* Blood clots in the lung
* Urinary tract infections or difficulty urinating
* Complications that affect the hip are the Joint United Nations, but in these cases, the transaction may not be as successful
* Difference leg length
* Stiffness
* Dislocation of the Hip (Ball takes Pops)
* The hip infection

Some complications such as infection or dislocation, may require another operation.

How do artificial hips Rise time?

As mentioned above, 90-95 percent of hip replacements are successful up to 10 years. The main long-term problems are loosening or wear. Loosening occurs either because the cement crumbles (as old mortar in brick building) or because the bone melts (absorbed) of cement. The 10-year, 25 percent of all artificial hips will loose on radiographs. Slightly less than half of them (about 5% to 10% of all artificial hips) will be painful and require revision.

Use may occur in the plastic cap in a few years. Small wear particles can cause inflammation resulting from thinning of the bones and fracture risk. Loosening and wear are in part linked to the cumbersome and how active you are. It is for this reason that we can operate on very obese patients or patients young, active. Loose, painful artificial hips can usually, but not always, be replaced. The results of a second operation is not as good as the first risks and complications are greater.

Hip Pain Symptoms

hip pain symptoms

Is Your Back Pain Indicating Chronic Pain Symptoms?

If you have been facing persistent back pain symptoms and have been ignoring them so far, then it is now time to give it a serious thought. Pain in the back which is usually severe or gives out a burning sensation can be termed as Chronic Back Pain. chronic pain symptoms are usually faced due to inflammation of the spinal tissues and they last over weeks or even months.

Five Stages from Acute to Chronic Back Pain

In most of the cases back pain progresses from being acute pain to chronic pain. Following are the stages through which you would undergo incase of a back pain:

Stage 1: In this stage, the back pain is at a preliminary phase. Most of us would ignore this back pain considering it to be a usual pain and take rest or maybe catch up on some extra hours of sleep! This stage lasts for maximum 2 -3 days.
