hip pain knee injury

Are knee pain & instability problems all that you ever have to think about?

If you are someone who participates in a lot of sporting activities, you know how important it will be to keep your knees in the best possible shape. Athletes, from high school stars to professional stars, all know that a knee injury could set them back for quite some time. Hiking and trekking enthusiasts as well as people who go jogging just to feel the wind in their face do not want to hurt their knees because it will stop them from doing the things that they love most. Dancers can lose professional gigs if they have a knee injury and even people who wait tables for a living can be held up from making money if they cannot walk to all of the tables while carrying their laden trays. Nobody can deny it- knee instability can be an outright pain!

Knee instability has done quite a bit of damage to a great number of people, preventing them from achieving their goals. This is why a person may want to use a knee brace anytime that they are suffering from knee instability, as this brace can help them to find the stability which they need to continue moving along steadily. The knee brace can help to lock their joint into a more safe place that will help them to support their weight, move more normally, and keep themselves from causing even more damage to their knees.

Suffering from knee instability means that a person will not be able to perform up to their full potential. For people who do a lot of running, having knee instability will stop them from placing their full weight on the joint and will hold them back while running. Those who do a great deal of lifting can suddenly drop everything when a knee gives out of them because of their knee instability. Those people who bend frequently, jumping and twisting, can find themselves stuck in a single position because they cannot manage the leverage that they were after.

How Does A Knee Brace Provide Stability?

The knee brace helps to keep the knee in a position where it will be difficult for a person to move their knee in a way that might cause damage. Common knee stability means that a person is having trouble keeping their knee in the best position to provide strength and support. The brace will help to provide this stability while a person heals internally and finds the strength on their own again. This stability, while external to your natural knee structure, can still protect a person from losing everything and severely damaging their joint.

You may also wish to use a knee brace even if you are not suffering from knee instability because this extra support can help protect you from hurting yourself in the future. When the knee brace stops you from moving in a way that knee instability would inevitably follow, you are being protected from trouble that could come from damaging your knee. This means that a knee brace is a great tool for anyone to take advantage of, whether they currently have knee instability or are simply looking to avoid it.

Anyone had experience of Cobalt Allergy discovered after hip replacement surgery causing eczema?

I had a hip replacement 18 months ago which involved a large cobalt headed prosthesis. I had small areas of eczema break out on the operated leg which were put down to trauma after the op. I had the other hip replaced 9 months ago with the same type prosthesis and 4 months ago had eczema break out in patches on all parts of my body. in places blisters appeared and there was quite a lot of ‘weeping’. It has taken a stong steroid cream to keep the eczema under control. I had a Patch test and Cobalt allergy was diagnosed. The Dermatologists say that the eczema will probably get worse over time and the cobalt in the prosthesis should be removed. My orthopaedic Surgeon tells me that he would not consider revision surgery as the only large heads available contain cobalt. Has anyone had experience of this or have any ideas as to where I can go from here, please?

I am allergic to nickel and was told to avoid cobalt as there is a high likelihood of cross reactivity.

The surgeon you are dealing with is an idiot. Many specialists/surgeons refuse to acknowledge allergies. I would definitely find yourself another specialist who is more familiar with allergies and implant materials.

I have had similar experiences with moronic doctors who refuse to believe in allergies to medications and/or materials used. You have to become your own specialist and advocate for yourself.

Apparently there are now ceramic implants as opposed to the traditional metal implants. There are no long-term stats on this material yet but it may be an option.

Leaving the cobalt in your body is not good. Your immune system will weaken as it is constantly fighting the cobalt in your system. Right now only your skin is affected but eventually you could develop other allergy symptoms from the constant exposure.

Discounted packages for Hip replacement in Goa and Kerala attracts hordes of global patients for cure along with exciting holiday

Hip replacement in Goa and Kerala is very economical and affordable. As health care costs skyrocket, patients in the developed world are looking overseas for medical treatment. India is capitalizing on its low costs and highly trained medical expertise to appeal to these “medical tourists”. The Indian Medical tourism brings this choice for you. Go for medical tour in India and treat yourself with the best quality care in India for Hip replacement. Health care centers of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore have the most advanced equipments for the treatment of patients. The moot feature of Hip replacement in Goa and Kerala is that the global patients coming for their treatment also can club the leisure packages, wherein they can enjoy lucrative beaches and natural beauty, thus getting cure with exotic holiday.

What is Hip replacement?

Hip replacement is the surgery for people with severe hip damage. When you have a hip replacement, the surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone from your hip joint and replaces them with new, man-made parts. This can relieve pain, help your hip joint work well, and improve your walking and other movements. Your doctor may recommend it if you have hip damage and pain and physical therapy, medicines and exercise don’t help. The most common problem after Hip replacement surgery is hip dislocation. Because a man-made hip is smaller than the original joint, the ball can come out of its socket. The surgery can also cause blood clots and infections. After a hip replacement, you might need to avoid certain activities, such as jogging and high-impact sports.

Indications leading to Hip replacement:

The Hip replacement is most commonly used to treat joint failure caused by osteoarthritis. Other indications include rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, traumatic arthritis, protrusio acetabuli, certain hip fractures, benign and malignant bone tumors, arthritis associated with Paget’s disease, ankylosing spondylitis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The aims of the procedure are pain relief and improvement in hip function. Hip replacement is usually considered only once when other therapies such as physical therapy and pain medications have failed.

When is a Hip replacement needed?

Total Hip replacement can benefit individuals suffering from a variety of hip problems resulting from either wear and tear from a lifetime of activity or from disease and injury. Some of the common hip problems leading to total Hip replacement are:

§  Osteoarthritis

§  Rheumatoid arthritis

§  Traumatic arthritis

§  Avascular necrosis

How is the diagnosis for Hip replacement made?

A complete history and physical examination about the patient who is suppose to get Hip replacement allows the physician to determine any correlation between symptoms of pain with past history and demands that have been placed upon the hip. The physician will inquire about experiencing episodes of trauma or instability and examine the ligaments and hip alignment. X-rays are used to determine the extent of degeneration to the cartilage or bone and may suggest a cause for the degeneration of the hip joint.

What is the procedure of Hip replacement?

During Hip replacement surgery, once the hip joint is exposed, the head and neck of the femur are removed. The shaft of the femur is then reamed to accept the metal component consisting of the head, neck and stem. The acetabulum is then reamed to accept a plastic cup. The ball and socket are then replaced into normal position. Both of these implants can be fastened into the bone with or without special cement. Hip replacement surgery is technically more sensitive, requiring a more exact fit of the metal component to the femur. In this procedure, the surface of the metal is prepared with a small porous roughened coat, which attracts bone in growth. This process is called porous ingrowths or oseointegration.

Recovery after Hip replacement surgery:

Postoperative care begins with a team of heath professionals within the hospital. Those closely involved with the postoperative total hip patient are: Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists.

Why India?

India is a prime destination for orthopedic surgery and Hip replacement is of great interest. Every year thousand of visitors come to India from around the world just for the orthopedic surgery. Many countries have developed links for speedy treatments in India for their nationals on account of the fact that in these countries one has to wait for extended periods of time to undergo surgery. Hip Replacement Exercises: Making Progress

When doing post-surgery hip replacement exercises, patients typically progress pretty quickly from lying down to sitting to standing to walking.  For walking, some will require a walker or crutches initially to help with balance.

When using a walker or crutches, you should stand up straight and as comfortably as possible with your weight balanced evenly on the device.  Move the walker or crutches forward a short distance, then move yourself forward by lifting your operated leg in such a way that your heel will end up touching the floor first.  As the step progresses, your knee and ankle will bend until your whole foot is resting evenly on the ground.

Let your toe lift off of the floor as you complete the step.  Move the walker or crutches again, and your knee and hip will move automatically into the next step.  The more you practice walking and the more you’re able to walk, the more weight you’ll be able to put on your operated leg.

If you start off using a walker or crutches, you’ll eventually graduate to one crutch or a cane.  You’re ready to be promoted when you’re able to stand without support, with your weight placed completely on both of your feet, without having to lean on your hands on the walker or crutches at all.  The single crutch or cane should be held in the hand opposite of the operated hip.

Stair-climbing is another milestone in hip replacement physical therapy.  This is an activity that demands strength and flexibility.  To begin with, you’ll require a handrail, and you’ll only be able to go one step at a time.  You should always lead up the stairs with the good leg and down the stairs with the “bad” (or thinking cup-half-full, improving) leg.

It might be a good idea to have someone to assist you with stair-climbing until your strength and mobility have returned, but don’t let that stipulation deter you from stair-climbing, because it’s a great exercise for strength and endurance.  However, avoid steps that are higher than the standard seven inches, and always use the handrail!

A full recovery from hip replacement surgery will take many months.  Your hip muscles were weakened first by pain of a deteriorated joint and then by pain (but a healing pain, hopefully) and swelling caused by the body’s natural defensive reaction to surgery.

You may have noticed that strength is a common theme when talking about hip replacement recovery:  less strength, more strength, regaining strength, returning strength, building strength.  How do you strengthen your muscles?  By exercise – it’s the only true way.

Your doctor will give you continuing strengthening exercises to do once you’ve progressed through the official physical therapy exercises.  These might include working with elastic tubes, exercycling, and, of course, walking.  There are other strengthening and endurance exercise routines available to you as well.  Just stick with it, and remember:  there is a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow—a fully functioning and pain-free hip.

Runners, how do you endure all the pain while running?

I am a long distance runner. I recently suffered an awful hip injury, and I am trying to get back into running. I am always one of the best in practice, and then at the races my times are slower than at practice. I let my head get in the way of my running. Any tips on what kind of mindset to have? Also, how do you personally block any pain that you have when you are running? Thanks!

It hurts to a point and then it doesn’t get any worse.
I remember this an concentrate on my breathing.
Our situations are exactly the same…I have a hip problem and run distance.
But anyways, I like to just pick an object, maybe a tree or a stopsign, and just concentrate on getting there. And then another, and another…
Good luck! :)
