Is My Rib Pain The Result Of Osteochondritis Dissecans?
There are many possible sources for pain in the ribs. One of the lesser known causes is a condition called osteochondritis dissecans, or simply osteochondritis.
You can suffer from osteochondritis dissecans anywhere there’s a joint in your body. It commonly occurs in the ankles, knees or hips.
Osteochondritis dissecans occurs when some of the cartilage in a joint, along with a thin layer of bone under it, separates from the end of a bone.
It is different from other types of joint pain that often affect older people, like arthritis. Osteochondritis dissecans is more likely to occur in younger people such as teenagers and young adults – especially those who are active in sports.
Anyone who has developed osteochondritis dissecans will feel some pain and discomfort near the end of a bone. In the case of rib pain caused by osteochondritis dissecans, the discomfort typically occurs where the ribs connect to either the breastbone or the backbone. No one has yet determined the exact cause of osteochondritis dissecans. But it’s clear that it usually occurs in one or more of the following circumstances.
1. Repetitive stress damage or injuries to a joint are among the most common causes. Since osteochondritis dissecans happens most often to younger people, it’s often the result of a sports injury (like a blow to the chest or back during football).
Accidents involving a blow to the back or chest (like the kind experienced in an auto accident) are typical causes of osteochondritis dissecans.
But, osteochondritis dissecans isn’t always caused by a single blow. If you sustain a series of repeated blows over the course of time, minute damage caused by each one will eventually become recognizable damage, leading to pain from osteochondritis dissecans.
2. Blocked or obstructed blood flow is a second common reason for osteochondritis dissecans. This shortage of blood flow causes deterioration of the bone and cartilage around it, causing a condition doctors call avascular necrosis.
3. Heredity is the third possible factor. Certain individuals seem to have a genetic predisposition for developing the condition.
Rib pain is the most common symptom of osteochondritis dissecans when the affected area is in the chest or back. Once again, the pain is likely to appear where the ribs meet the breastbone or the spine.
Pain may be especially apparent when you’re exercising vigorously and need to breathe deeply and quickly.
As previously mentioned, other areas of the body can develop osteochondritis dissecans too. Affected joints don’t move as readily and you don’t have the normal range of motion. When osteochondritis dissecans develops in joints, there’s sometimes a feeling of weakness, along with some tenderness and swelling. When there’s pain in the front of the torso from osteochondritis dissecans, it’s located in the same area that you typically feel angina – the chest pain you feel when you’re having a heart attack. So it can sometimes be frightening. Pain in the upper back near the spine could seem like a symptom of gallbladder trouble.
Early diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans is important because if it isn’t treated, it can result in long-term disability in the affected joint. Treatment of osteochondritis dissecans focuses on alleviating pain and restoring normal function to the joint to the highest degree possible. A number of treatment options are available. Outcomes vary from one patient to another but your doctor will probably suggest one or more of the following possibilities.
Refraining from activities and movements that could aggravate the damage and worsen the condition. Give the affected area a chance to rest and heal.
In most cases, it’s a good idea to immobilize the affected joint. This won’t work, of course, if osteochondritis dissecans affects your ribs, because they move every time you breathe in and out. However, you can certainly avoid sports activities or vigorous exercise, which make you breathe faster and deeper.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can help relieve your rib pain. These are often better known by their brand names, which include Advil, Motrin, Aleve, and Naprosyn.
Exercises and physical therapy will normally help patients with osteochondritis dissecans. But when the condition affects the ribs, exercises are somewhat limited. Follow the instructions of your therapist or doctor closely.
If non-surgical options don’t relieve rib pain caused by osteochondritis dissecans after 3-4 months, most doctors will recommend surgical remedies.
By working with your doctor to get an early diagnosis, and taking the steps needed to restore joint health, you can alleviate your rib pain and return to normal activities in the least possible time.

Total Hip Arthroplasty And Hip Resurfacing Operation: Are They The Same?
The ASR XL Acetebular Hip System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System are two of the hip implants manufactured by the DePuy Orthopaedics, the subsidiary of the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. Complaints were raised regarding these hip replacement products which allegedly inflicts harm to users. The cost garnered from the compensation granted to the affected individuals due to the DePuy hip replacement recall issued caused a decrease in Johnson & Johnson’s income. Nevertheless, let us tackle on the difference between the two operation which utilizes the two said hip implants. Hip replacement surgeries can actually be a total hip replacement (THR) or a hip resurfacing operation.
Those who are afflicted with bone anomaly such as osteoarthritis would often experience worsening of the hip bone joint, which is also known as the acetabulofemoral joint (AF joint), if the condition is left untreated or if unsuccessful medical managements were employed. If the condition proved to be irreparable, a hip replacement intervention is indicated. A Total Hip Replacement (THR) operation (also known as a Total Hip Arthroplasty) is the hip operation usually utilized. In this hip management, the irreversibly damaged hip joint is replaced by a hip replacement device. The operation usually involves the removal of the acetabulum and the femoral head which is then replaced with an artificial hip prosthesis that functions like the acetabulofemoral ball-and-socket joint. There is also an operation known as partial hip replacement or hemiarthroplasty wherein only the femoral head is removed and replaced.
A Hip Resurfacing Operation, on the other hand, is actually a divergent intervention for total hip replacement operation. In a hip resurfacing method, the part of the hip bone joint to be removed and replaced is only minimal. The only area which is manipulated during the surgery is the femoral head which is replaced by a hip prosthesis made of cobalt-chrome metal, has a mushroom shape and is hollow. When the patient moves, the activity induces the secretion of synovial fluid which naturally coats the surface of the metal cup and lubricates it for smoother movement of the joint.
Secure a skilled surgeon who will implement a successful operation if you want to try to get under the knife for hip injury management. Choosing the most efficient and safest hip implant is also important. With the issuance of the DePuy hip recall, one can expel a huge sigh of relief. But when a recall is not enough for the damage endured by afflicted individuals, filing a DePuy hip replacement lawsuit can be done. For more information about the recall and lawsuits, visit related sites available.

Monday, September 5th, 2011Your Knees and Hips Will Fail You
Did you know that if you are overweight you are increasing the risk of requiring a hip or knee replacement by 3 to 4 times and at the very minimum suffering from osteoarthritis? Do you know what Osteoarthritis is? Well its a condition that is very painful and is the leading cause for people who are now having joint replacement surgery.
I recently read an article from a University in Australia. They studied roughly 32,000 people of all walks of life. A body mass index was established and a waist circumference, waist to hip and percentage of fat or fat mass was compiled for the study group. This was all to determine how much pressure each person was applying to their major joints. What they found was quite interesting just a 15% BMI appears to cause increased risk of primary joint replacement; it even went on to say that the study showed 10 to 15 years later a drastic increase in replacements for people who did not reduce their BMI. Now I’m not going to tell you what the increment is for people with a higher than 15% BMI is, I think I should just leave that alone, we don’t want to cause a panic.
Now is the time to lower your BMI it’s never too soon to start! If you are young you should start now lowering your BMI and get your weight under control NOW! Take a look at our product website for Phen375, we have great solutions for just about everyone.
Did you know that many more people now in their 40s and even 30s are requiring knee and hip replacements? What has caused that drastic increase? Do you think it’s an environmental issue or is it excessive exercise? It can be a combination of either or both actually.
Let’s look at this a little closer. Have you noticed that there are a lot more extreme sports now for young adults and teenagers. Bicycling, riding horses, skate boards, motor cross, water or snow skiing, soccer, basketball, and American football. I am sure I have forgotten a few but you get the general idea. Younger people have been abusing there primary joints much more that previous generations. Extreme sports are a lot of fun but are very damaging to joint health. Now if you consider the environmental side those same generations are basically growing up on processed foods, fast foods, sodas, and energy drinks.
You have probably already noticed some press about or discussions about the issues of joint replacement for knees and hips and know it’s a growing concern. There is a big reason it’s getting so much attention these days, the pharmaceutical or artificial joint replacement manufactures are spending millions finding newer better and longer lasting materials. That’s a good thing as most people currently having replacement surgery for a major joint will require a replacement every 10 years thereafter. So making longer lasting joints is a good idea once we have to replace our original joints. Of course this is all predicated on the fact we will need new joints, but you can bet they have done their homework and that’s why so much money is being poured into artificial joint replacement procedures, manufacturing and development.
Phen375 can help you save your knees and hips starting today! Please visit Phen375 to learn more and watch some videos about Phen375.

Is it normal to get muscle twitching after a total hip replacement?
I had a hip replaced just over a week ago. I am experiencing muscle twitches in my neck, arms, hands and the leg and foot of the leg that has NOT had the replacement, and this is interferring with my sleep. (BTW These are not the same as the painful muscle spasms that I get on the operated hip leg.) Are these twitches normal? Do they go away? Will a body massage help to stop them? Thanks.
I’ve had both hips replaced. I never experienced anything like the “twitches” you describe but I did ask for a muscle relaxant a day or so after my first replacement. My muscles kept tensing up for some odd reason. The drug prescribed was Flexeril. Suggest you ask your doctor about this. S/he may prescribe something to either relax you or help you sleep. I do recall that I had a terrible time sleeping for several weeks after surgery, mostly because of the fact that I was asked to sleep on my back and I’d get back aches because of it since I’m normally a side sleeper.

Goa is also famous for its exotic beaches and tourist locations that can be beneficial for faster recovery post treatment. So, patients can opt forTotal hip replacement in Goa and can have a holiday with efficient results.
When is Total Hip Replacement Considered?
Total hip replacements are usually performed for severe arthritic conditions. The operation is sometimes performed for other problems such as hip fractures or avascular necrosis (a condition in which the bone of the hip ball dies). Most patients who have artificial hips are over 55 years of age, but the operation is occasionally performed on younger persons.
Circumstances vary, but generally, patients are considered for total hip replacements if:
- Your pain is severe enough to restrict work, recreation, and the ordinary activities of daily living.
- Your pain is not relieved by anti-inflammatory medicine, the use of a cane or walker and restricting activities.
- You have significant stiffness of the hip.
- Your x-rays show advanced arthritis, or other problems.
What can I expect of a Total Hip Replacement?
A Total hip replacement will provide pain relief in 90 to 95 percent of patients. It will allow patients to carry out many normal activities of daily living. The artificial hip may allow you to return to active sports or heavy labor under your physician’s instructions. Most patients with stiff hips before surgery will regain near-normal motion, and nearly all have improved motion.
What are the risks of Total Hip Replacement?
Total hip replacement is a major operation. The effect of most complications is simply that the patient stays in the hospital longer. The most common complications are not directly related to the hip and do not usually affect the result of the operation. These include:
- blood clots in the leg
- urinary infections or difficulty urinating
- blood clots in the lung
Complications that affect the hip are less common, but in these cases, the operation may not be as successful:
- difference in leg length
- stiffness
- dislocation of hip (ball pops out of socket)
- infection in the hip
A few of the complications, such as infection or dislocation, may require re-operation. Infected artificial hips sometimes have to be removed, leaving a short (by one to three inches), somewhat weak leg, but one that is usually reasonably comfortable and one on which you can walk with the aid of a cane or crutches.
How is the Procedure Performed for Total Hip Replacement?
Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure for replacing the hip joint. This joint is composed of two parts – the hip socket (acetabulum, a cup-shaped bone in the pelvis) and the “ball” or head of the thighbone (femur). During the surgical procedure, these two parts of the hip joint are removed and replaced with smooth artificial surfaces. The artificial socket is made of high-density plastic, while the artificial ball with its stem is made of a strong stainless metal. These artificial pieces are implanted into healthy portions of the pelvis and thighbones and affixed with a bone cement (methyl methacrylate).
An alternative hip prosthesis called a “cementless” total hip replacement has the potential to allow bone to grow into it, and therefore may last longer than the cemented hip. This is an important consideration for the younger patient. In some cases, only one of the two components (socket or stem) may be fixed with cement and the other is cementless and would be called a “hybrid” hip prosthesis.
How long will I be in the hospital after Total Hip Replacement surgery?
The hospital stay usually ranges from three to four days. Patients who live with someone who can assist them are usually able to go home without much problem. However, patients who live alone are encouraged to find someone who can stay with them when they return home. Patients who do not progress well may require a short stay in a rehabilitation center, where they can receive physical and occupational therapy and instruction in how to care for themselves at independently.

Undertaker’s last match at WrestleMania 26??? (retirement)?
According to Mike Johnson of PW-Insider.com, there is a lot of concern about The Undertaker’s health and his long-term future in wrestling following his performance in Puerto Rico a few weeks back. When Undertaker had his hip surgery after Wrestlemania, people backstage saw it as a minor issue that was being taken care of. As it turns out, it was actually more serious than expected (some sources claim a hip replacement). There were even private concerns as to whether he was going to get back in the ring at all.
One of the reasons Undertaker’s Breaking Point PPV bout was booked to only go nine minutes was due to his pain as of late and the fact that he has been moving noticeably slower. There is some talk going around right now that Wrestlemania 26 could be his final major PPV event.
What do you think????

Right Hip Pain Lower Back
Wednesday, August 10th, 2011
What causes right back sharp pain, lower back which extends to right hip and inner right thigh area.?
Right back pain, feels like right muscle running north and south being twisted, a pulling sensation as well as lower right back pain, a sharp pain. Only thing to help us a back wrap which I wear a lot. I’m right handed and do a lot of gardening.
Sciatic nerve or herniated disc go to your physician and tell him the symptoms. Physical Therapy might help. One way to confirm would be an MRI, although MRI’s don’t always show everything. Back injuries can be tricky, just because it can’t be seen doesn’t mean it’s not there. Don’t let it go and have someone tell you it’s a strain. If you are feeling pain in your legs or reaching your toes or heels at times, there is a problem. I had someone keep telling me it was just a severe strain. Well after complaining enought we found out it was a herniated disc and even though my symptoms couldn’t be understood I continued. I was having pain in my left leg and also in my right but the herniated disc was on the left. Some symptoms can’t be explained but don’t disregard them. If your body is saying there is pain even though it doesn’t seem like it should be in that area, tell your doctor and make sure he listens. Mine did.
