If you have a larger breed of dog or looking for it, you may have heard the term OFA certified. Is the hip and the dog is an indicator of possible problems your dog. hip problems for any dog active cause pain and discomfort will worsen. Joint instability lead to hip osteoarthritis.

So What is the OFA certificate? Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is the recognized certification body to assess and determine whether a dog has hip problems. The foundation was created in 1966 by John M. Olin after finding that dysplasia of the hip was affecting their hunting dogs. Hip dysplasia is a genetic disease and can be evaluated by radiographs. The OFA maintains a database for hip dysplasia and now also maintains databases on other genetic diseases.

Orthopedic Foundation has identified seven animals categories to describe the canine hip joints. They are: Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, mild, moderate, serious. There are several ways to treat hip dysplasia in dog's age and severity of the problem.

For young dogs under 10 months, veterinarians can Surgery to stabilize the joint. This surgery is called a triple pelvic osteotomy. It involves cutting three places in the pelvic bone, turning the sleeve and stabilization of the patella with plates and screws. This procedure is only for the puppies, because once there are changes in the arthritic joint, surgery not possible. Another surgical option is total hip replacement. Never give your medicine to your dog NSAIDs. Side effects of these drugs in dogs is the same, it is for us. Side effects include upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. Some veterinarians may recommend an all natural, quality human complement for your pet dog. It has been shown that glucosamine and chondroitin are useful in rebuilding joint cartilage. This may take about a week before the supplement is necessary to get results is achieved.

Im worried..about my dad?

My dad has had alot of previous heart attacks due to his weight, since then he has put on a good 5 more stone, and has been put in a special block of flats for people who are likely to need emergency care ( have red cords everywhere which you pull in an emergency to send for help ) , he always has trouble with swelling of the leg, and hes needed a hip replacement for ages. i really worry about him as he is also getting on a bit. But i feel so helpless no matter how much i try and warn him or encourage him by telling him how much healthy food tastes great these days, but he dosnt seem to worry about it !. and as i live in cornwall and he lives in birmingham, i cant physically cook his dinners for him. im really concerned for his health, please help i think he’s in diah strates.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. He is an adult and will make his own decisions. I have a similar situation with my husband. He is overweight, has hypertension and smokes. Of course, I worry, but no matter how much I try, I cannot make him change his habits. All I can do is love him and hope that he will see the light. If you nag too much, you ruin the time that you do have together. Worry, hope, pray and try to encourage him. That is really about all that you can do.

i have hip pain shooting down my leg, what should i do?

mri results: impression: L4 L5 degenerative disc disease with disc bulge and right lateral neural foraminal protrusion with mild thecal sac and moderate to severe medial right-sided neural foramina narrowing and moderate medial left-sided neural foramina narrowing in combination with posterior element hypertrophy.

will this go away soon?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but as a general rule discs don’t repair themselves.Not only that , the longer the injury goes untreated, the lower the success rate when treatment does occur.
To make matters worse, the “pain shooting down my leg” is indicative of sciatica, a condition where the sciatic nerve is pinched or damaged. This is often a permanent condition, that at best would improve mildly if surgery to free it was undertaken.
I personally have been plagued by back problems since the age of 15. I had my first back surgery at the age of 15 for a herniated disc. Since then I’ve damaged my L4 L5 like you, but can’t have surgery because of other medical problems.
In terms of treatment I think I’ve tried pretty much everything, with no success. Physiotherapy can provide temporary relief. Facetary blocks (injection of medication directly into the spine) did absolutely nothing for me.
If this injury is fresh, I’d advise you to go see a nerosurgeon. You may be a candidate for surgery and that, in my opinion, would offer you the best chance at regaining an almost “normal” back.

The Birmingham hip device is used for rejuvenation of the hip, not hip replacement. Hip Resurfacing has been abroad for several years, but it is only recently that a device has received FDA approval. The idea is that the resurfacing procedure is that the femoral head to be removed as is done in a total hip replacement. In addition, the device may be more stable because the metal ball (Actually it is a metal cover for their own ball of the femur) can be much higher than in THR, when the cup is full a thing (poly, ceramic). This layer limits the size of the ball. A larger ball is more stable than small ones. That said, both hips replaced 58 years. I am delighted with my new hip. If you were younger than 40 or 50 and qualified for the resurfacing (not all) I would say that at least should consider resurfacing (But note that this procedure is still kind of new to the United States and many ortho surgeons who do not even run). There is still major surgery with all risks inherent in surgery. It can also be a rather controversial issue in the media hip. I tried to give a balanced response with advantages and disadvantages. Has anyone had the Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure performed in the United States. I would like some information?

Me Ostioarthitis diagnoded with hips (Advanced), you probably will have hip surgery in 2007. Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure that has been recently approved by the FDA and is considered much better than the conventional hip for someone like me who is relatively young and active. I have 52 years and the figure I have had arthritis for about 10 years before being diagnosed recently. I wish I knew someone who could have done the procedure.

I make sure that none of the patients rejuvenation have volunteered to answer your question. I have not had the procedure, I had both hips replaced 58 years of metal / poly bearings, some years before FDA approved the RESURF device. Until then, some Americans have gone overseas have done (some went to Belgium). What I can offer are a couple of links other reliable information about the procedure. Hello everybody, my son had septicemia 5 days after birth and his left hip joint is destructed due to septic arthritis. Now he is 23 yrs old. Since for last 6, 7 yrs he is bending his left knee to adjust the shortening and due to this his under knee muscles have become tight. We consulted an orthopedic to get his knee corrected; he suggested an operation to loosen his under knee muscles and said that his leg would become straight. We went for a second opinion where the doctor suggested that since his femoral head has been destructed and has gone2 inches up, the hip joint has to be replaced. Some of our known people say that at this young age hip replacement should not be done. We are totally confused. My son has 3 months vacation and we want his operation to be done during this period.
