When is Total Hip Replacement Considered?

Total hip replacements are usually performed for severe arthritic conditions. The operation is sometimes performed for other problems such as hip fractures or avascular necrosis (a condition in which the bone of the hip ball dies). Most patients who have artificial hips are over 55 years of age, but the operation is occasionally performed on younger persons.

Circumstances vary, but generally, patients are considered for total hip replacements if:

  • Your pain is severe enough to restrict work, recreation, and the ordinary activities of daily living.
  • Your pain is not relieved by anti-inflammatory medicine, the use of a cane or walker and restricting activities.
  • You have significant stiffness of the hip.
  • Your x-rays show advanced arthritis, or other problems.

What can I expect of a Total Hip Replacement?

A Total hip replacement will provide pain relief in 90 to 95 percent of patients. It will allow patients to carry out many normal activities of daily living. The artificial hip may allow you to return to active sports or heavy labor under your physician’s instructions. Most patients with stiff hips before surgery will regain near-normal motion, and nearly all have improved motion.

What are the risks of Total Hip Replacement?

Total hip replacement is a major operation. The effect of most complications is simply that the patient stays in the hospital longer. The most common complications are not directly related to the hip and do not usually affect the result of the operation. These include:

  • blood clots in the leg
  • urinary infections or difficulty urinating
  • blood clots in the lung

Complications that affect the hip are less common, but in these cases, the operation may not be as successful:

  • difference in leg length
  • stiffness
  • dislocation of hip (ball pops out of socket)
  • infection in the hip

A few of the complications, such as infection or dislocation, may require re-operation. Infected artificial hips sometimes have to be removed, leaving a short (by one to three inches), somewhat weak leg, but one that is usually reasonably comfortable and one on which you can walk with the aid of a cane or crutches.

How is the Procedure Performed for Total Hip Replacement?

Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure for replacing the hip joint. This joint is composed of two parts – the hip socket (acetabulum, a cup-shaped bone in the pelvis) and the “ball” or head of the thighbone (femur). During the surgical procedure, these two parts of the hip joint are removed and replaced with smooth artificial surfaces. The artificial socket is made of high-density plastic, while the artificial ball with its stem is made of a strong stainless metal. These artificial pieces are implanted into healthy portions of the pelvis and thighbones and affixed with a bone cement (methyl methacrylate).

An alternative hip prosthesis called a “cementless” total hip replacement has the potential to allow bone to grow into it, and therefore may last longer than the cemented hip. This is an important consideration for the younger patient. In some cases, only one of the two components (socket or stem) may be fixed with cement and the other is cementless and would be called a “hybrid” hip prosthesis.

How long will I be in the hospital after Total Hip Replacement surgery?

The hospital stay usually ranges from three to four days. Patients who live with someone who can assist them are usually able to go home without much problem. However, patients who live alone are encouraged to find someone who can stay with them when they return home. Patients who do not progress well may require a short stay in a rehabilitation center, where they can receive physical and occupational therapy and instruction in how to care for themselves at independently.

Exercise and loosing weight with a total Hip replacement?

Ten years ago , when I was 19 I had a total hip replacement due to an injury I had horseback riding. Since then I have had two kids and my metabolism seems to be slowing down. The more weight I gain the harder it is on my joint so I want to be sure I don’t gain alot. Lately its been getting harder (I’m trying to stay around 125 lbs) but I don’t know of alot of exercises that are good with total hip replacements to get lean muscle a boost my metabolism. I’ve tryed yoga for the low impact but alot of the stands really irritate the joint. What can I do that is low impact but gret for lean muscle gain and weight loss??

I’ve had both of my hips replaced.
You should be able to do these activities (provided that your physician approves):
bicycling, including stationary bikes
elliptical trainer (this is really a good workout & low-impact)
walking (ask if it’s ok to use a treadmill since walking on a treadmill is slightly different than walking without one)
recumbent cycles or steppers
Some “hippies” go back to doubles tennis but personally I refuse to engage in this activity because it would involve running, which I do not do in the interest of preserving my joint.
You should also be able to use free weights for upper body strength. I also used a weight machine at the gym for my legs.
And you can always resurrect the physical therapy routines that you (I assume) had following your hip replacement. Even though I’m 5 years out from surgery, I still do some of those routines.
I walk about 2 miles 5-6 times a week at a speed of 3 mph.
You were very young to have hip replacement so no matter what you do (and if you live long enough), you’ll probably need at least one or two revision surgeries.

Tasty Foods That Can Aid In Your Hip Replacement Recovery

Having a hip replaced can be a great pain reliever, allowing a person to enjoy everyday living the way they always imagined. Yet, there’s a general fear of hip replacement recovery obstacles, like blood clots or Osteolysis.

Because a hip replacement can be the result of numerous life situations, medications and follow up care may vary. Still, across the board physicians agree that a healthy diet is a big key to recovery success. Since hip replacement surgery can make the body more vulnerable to illnesses, it’s important to load up on super nutritious foods. The exciting thing is, there are foods that are packed with both powerful nutrients and taste.

Imagine enjoying a carefully seasoned salmon grilled with a splash of lemon.  Or a mouth watering Trout, well prepared and tender.  These fish taste good and provide your body with Omega-3 fatty acids known also as Omega 3s. Omega 3s are amongst the top food champions known for their ability to help ease joint pain and boost immune systems.

The moment they work their way into a body’s system, they begin activating a chemical that helps control inflammation. Their role is so vital that a recovering patient can enjoy up to two hearty servings of one of these cold water fish a week.  Almost every restaurant has one of these fish on their dinner menu but there are several everyday recipes that can show you how to make this fish an at home dinner delight.

Do you have a sweet tooth?  Indulge in a cupful of fresh strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.  Because these sweet treats are flavor filled bites of antioxidants, they also reign as some of the top food champions.

The antioxidants these berries release are disease fighting, preventing the stress that comes from oxidation.  There have been several studies showing that a cup of berries a day can help increase the amount of antioxidants your body needs, especially after a surgery when your body needs the extra help. Served chilled, steamed, or freshly picked, berries are an excellent addition to your recovery menu.

If after eating a wonderful fish dinner or berry snack you still have a desire for a little more, try having a small portion of dark chocolate.  An ounce of smooth, melt in your mouth dark chocolate eaten everyday has been proven to reduce the formation of plaque formed in arteries while simultaneously lowering blood pressure. During hip recovery, this treat is one you don’t have to feel bad about enjoying.

Tasty foods that can aid in your hip replacement recovery really do exist. Fish, delicious berries, and dark chocolate are just as nutritious for children as they are for adults.

Hip Replacement Exercises: Easy Does It

Whether you are preparing or recovering from hip surgery, the target must = "_blank" Hip replacement> exercises. Why do before surgery? Because if you start an exercise routine before, which will really help recover more quickly. Your body will already have gained some strength and endurance that will have to negotiate this new hip.

In fact, when two replacements hip and knee, is becoming a more common practice for physicians to start patients on physical before surgery. Both groups of arthroplasty of the patients showed increased muscle strength of leg exercises with patients before surgery, but only the replacement of the hip, in fact, show a functional improvement of the affected joint before surgery.

In one study, patients who have had surgery before joint replacement were 73% less likely to be discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation facility instead of their own homes.

What are examples of exercises that probably hope to do after or even before surgery? Various forms of treatment available, of course, but often, as the first post-operative exercises, Doctors recommend heel slides, straight leg raises, and defines the eruption.

heel slides sitting on the floor with legs straight ahead of you. You slide your heel toward your buttocks, bending the knee, keeping the heel on the floor. Then, slowly straighten your knees and slide your leg back from where it started. Then relax and repeat 10 times. This exercise is beneficial in strengthening the quadriceps and hamstrings hip to the knee.

Then you have the right leg raises to strengthen hip joint itself. These involve supine on a flat surface and knee flexion of the leg that is recovering from surgery on a 90 degree angle with your feet on the ground. Recovery, or procedure, the leg must be straight. Slowly lift leg six inches off the ground device using the front thigh muscles, hold for five seconds and slowly lower ground again. Relax and repeat 10 times.

gluteal sets help strengthen the gluteal and hip muscles strong buttocks help hip extension and lead to stabilization of the joint. You lie on your back with knees bent at a 10 – to 15-degree angle and squeeze your buttocks. Hold for five seconds, relax and repeat 10 times. You should do three sets of 10 three times a day.

Remember that other exercises and exercise routines are available for you, these are just a few items to start. The hip height obtained new, more will be able to do, but be sure to listen to advice from your doctor in the amount of physical activity is right for you.

hip pain running exercises
What to do about hip pain?

I’m 38 years old, and for the past two-three weeks have been having considerable hip pain, mainly on the left side. I can still walk decently, but have an especially tough time going up stairs.

A friend of mine says it’s probably the nerve that runs down my leg that is giving me the pain. I think I am compesating for the pain on the left side, and that’s leading to sore muscles on my right leg and lower back.

So, what should I do?! Are there stretching and other exercises that might help? Should I see a doctor? Chiropractor?

Thanks for your help.

(BTW: I weigh 165 pounds, so it’s not any extra weight that led to the problem. In fact, I think carrying my two-year-old daughter around town and up stairs caused the injury)

cut back on the carbs and make sure you are getting enough magnesium.

(had hip pain (and hand pain) for years before I found this out, just by accident. White flour products, potatoes, corn, sugar (think of it as white death), acid-based fruit.) If I were Chinese, I’d say you have too much yang.)

If it is stress-impact related, make sure that you carry your daughter evenly. (like with a sling or back pack)

But if it continues for more than a month, I’d suggest going to see a doctor. He’ll probably prescribe analgesics

Hip Replacement And Exercise

hip replacement and exercise
I have to have a hip replacement in the spring, how long before it is completely healed?

I need a hip for several years and finally discovered that this is the problem, not lack of exercise that my doctor told me. How long will it take on average before that I am relatively free pain and returning to work and exercise? I can carry more weight and can make a difference and was not able to walk or exercise without pain for more than 15.

I both hips replaced in separate cabinets of 5 months apart. The payback period for the replacement of the hip usually involves Physical therapy begins immediately when you remove the patient from the bed and walk in a walker. My PT has continued for nearly two months with the exercises become progressively more difficult. I continued my routines PT PT, even after external consultation was completed, adding things like bike elliptical walk longer distances weight lifting, etc. It is a good time to continue with the exercise, as already used PT exercises to do every day without pain? Since hospitals and doctors are quite aggressive treatment of pain today, you can almost expect to be without pain immediately. For my first couple of days after the operation, which had PCA pump that delivered a fixed amount of pain medicine in my IV and automatically pressing a button allowed me whether I thought it needed more. Then carried the ACC, put me on oral medication. The worst pain I had all the hospital when I moved to the "bad" and took me away from my back by my side. In these cases, the pain was sharp but fleeting. May also be invited to sleep on your back with a pillow between your legs the elimination of some weeks. I have back pain because I am not sleep again. Once I got rolling on my right side, even for short periods, I have a good night's sleep from time to time. It was more boring than my hip. After the dismissal of the hospital gave me a prescription for pain medication. However, I discovered I could get without a prescription Tylenol, has not needed pain medication prescribed (Not just agree with me). and I was allowed to run at about 5 weeks her. The time to return to work depends largely on the type of work to do. Felt I could go back to my old job about 6 weeks after my second hip replacement. It was a job that allowed me to spend time alternately sitting and standing and walking, but does not include lifting and carrying heavy objects. I found this session for long periods difficult. I prefer to stand and walk. Everything depends on the nature employment and, of course, the surgeon has something to say upon returning to work. Some workplaces may require your doctor's approval before returning to work.

These are Some of the Causes of the Lower Back Pain and Hip Pain

Lower Back and Hip Pain and important to note. Serious problems relating to back pain are of the hip and the lower back .Usually lower back and hip pain come hand in hand. Causes of hip pain are same as of lower back pain.

Basically your movements are affected if you are facing lower back pain and hip pain. This problem can not be removed fully and that is very painful. The old age people who face this problem are facing terrible experience. They have to stay at one place to avoid the movement and it is not possible for them to walk around their home.

If you ask your doctor the reasons of the lower back pain and hip pain, he may not give the answer. The causes of this pain are spinal stenosis, arthritis and a fracture. The pelvis, thigh bone and femur are together at hip joint. These bones have cover of articular cartilage, a different matter. It works as a shock absorber. Contraction and expansion with the pressure helps to protect the bones. The hip joint has a lubricating substance around the muscles. The hip joint has the capsule which can go in any direction as hip joint is the ball and socket joint. The nerves around this area come from lower back.

The causes of the lower back pain and hip pain occur at the same time are as follows.

Nerves serving the hip come from lower back and they are affected with neurological problem. Any muscle injury in lower back may affect hip muscles. This will be resolved automatically. But it is not easy to face such pain. Arthritis will affect both the organs hip and back.

From aging and use a situation arises where the fluid filled sacs get inflammation and this causes pain. An old age person may get fracture with the gentle fall. It could not be operated and hence the patient has to face the problem for his whole life.

Lower back pain can be treated with the regular treatment. After finding out the causes of the back pain doctor will suggest some medication with the exercise routine and the improvement in daily habits. Any change in the back pain should be pointed to your doctor. If there is pain in hip you should immediately contact your doctor because it may be a serious symptom of any other problem like arthritis or congenital hip problem. This is the situation where hip joint ball is not seated properly in the socket. If the socket is shallow the ball will move from the edge of the socket.

If your two legs are of different length then you might be facing the problem of hip pain. The arthritis also needs different treatment. These treatments are to be followed for longer period.

Treatment includes use of heat and cold water. Weight control and medicines against inflammation is necessary. Lower back and hips together give support to our whole body hence the attention to their problem is must for us to stand with strong support.

Best of the body low-impact aerobics background?

What are the best low-impact aerobic exercises for the hamstrings, calves, hips and buttocks? My knees make noise, no danger of cracking (w / or pain), though I'm young and fit. Apparently, it is fluid in the knees probably caused by my children dance and all physical activity. Therefore, I am afraid that exercises like squats and slots could aggravate my knees, but I want something more intense than yoga or pilates.

First, I would not underestimate Pilates or yoga. My Pilates helps my breathing, posture, flexibility, balance and overall strength — all good things. The best exercise for lower body, given its location, is the elliptical machine. The best thing (as most of gyms) have different programs (hill, random, manual, etc), and the settings of the resistance (the problem) and, of course, time. minute, the elliptical burns more calories. You can also do the reverse, which works the muscles in different ways. The hamstrings, calves, hips and buttocks are working very hard on the ellliptical. A second possibility is stationary recumbent bike, but you burn fewer calories per minute and does not work the lower body as well. On the other part, would like to recline a little variety is good if you're too tired to contest the ellipse, and of course you can sit, while the elliptical (A machine to simulate cross country skiing to some extent) is his position. You might also consider some machines with low body weight, rather free weight squats and cracks that you mentioned. legs, machines hamstrings, calves, calf extensions, curls ass veal calves, and everyone else can be done with minimum weight. crepitus, which is the sound experience, is generally benign, but you are right to be cautious. Move slowly and listen to your body. And good luck!
