Is your car driving your pain? An osteopaths opinion

Is your car driving your pain? An osteopaths opinion

Whether driving a car, a bus, or a lorry or even as a passenger – you could be suffering driving related back pain.

In all these cases, osteopathy can help to reduce pain and your osteopath in Manchester can offer advice on back pain management, including simple exercises to prevent problems in the future.

Keep moving is advised by osteopaths -

It’s not just the driver who can stiffen up in a car. Passengers are often seated for long periods of time in a fixed position.

Movement is the key for car, driver and passenger.

As a passenger, try to alter your position from time to time and sit with your knees bent and thighs level and comfortable. Avoid sitting with your legs crossed; move them regularly.

For driver and passengers, stop regularly, ideally once an hour, especially when feeling tired.

Get out of your vehicle and walk around it several times.

Stretch like a cat, gently moving your arms around, bringing your knees up to your hips, and stretching your whole body.

Osteopaths ask any back pain sufferer to consider the following

  • Choose a car, with an adjustable lumbar support (and use it). Alternatively, keep a small cushion in the car to support your lower back.
  • Choose a car with a higher kerb height to make getting in and out less stressful on the spine.
  • Depressing the clutch increases the pressure on your back so choose an automatic to avoid this.
  • Power steering also significantly reduces the load on the spine.

Driving can give you…

  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Eyestrain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Wrist Pain
  • Elbow Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Bottom Ache
  • Hip Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Foot and Ankle Pain

Is the car the right fit for you?

Sometimes, the design of the car itself can lead to back problems. If you have to drive particularly long distances, check out the cabin and layout of the controls with the tests set out below, and a comfortable motorway cruiser is gentler on your back

If the car can pass these four simple tests then there is a good chance that it is suitable for the particular driver. By using these tests a prospective buyer can make an informed choice of car and hopefully avoid ‘driver’s back pain’.

Try the following tests that our Manchester Osteopaths often mention

1. The Praying Test

– The driver places both hands together, pointing forwards. If the steering wheel is not offset then the driver should be pointing straight at the centre of the wheel. The danger of having an offset wheel is that most drivers tend to rotate the middle of the spine to compensate for its position, producing long term back strain.

2. The Fist Test

– With the seat in the normal driving position make a fist with the left hand keeping the thumb to the side of the index finger. It should be possible to insert the fist on the crown of the head. If it is only just possible to insert the flat of the hand between the roof and the head then there is insufficient headroom. The danger of having too little headroom is that the driver may compensate for the lack of height by slouching in the seat which puts a strain on the spine and thighs.

3. The Look Down Test

– With both hands placed evenly on the steering wheel look down at the legs. It should be possible to see equal amounts of both legs between the arms. Frequently the left leg will be visible but the right leg will be obscured by the right arm which may indicate that the shoulder girdle is rotated to the left in relation to the pelvis.

4. The Right Leg Test

– This test should be performed after you have stopped having driven the car for a short while.

Once again, look down and examine the position of the right leg. Is it elevated above the level of the left or has it fallen out towards the edge of the seat? Is the right foot roughly in line with the thigh as it should be, or has it had to come across towards the centre of the car?

5. The Kerb Height Test

– Swing the right leg out of the car as though getting out, and place the right foot on the ground. Try and ensure the lower leg (shin and calf) is in a vertical position.

Now look at the surface of the right thigh. It should be sloping down towards the knee. If it is sloping upwards (i.e. if the knee is higher than the hip) you will have difficulty when exiting this vehicle.

If the car can pass these 5 simple tests there is a good chance that it is suitable for that particular driver. By utilising the tests, a prospective purchaser should be able to produce a short list of suitable vehicles, from which they can then make a choice.

When driving

Car seats can be adjusted to suit your posture but make sure that you always:

1. Keep your seat reasonably upright, leaning backwards only at a slight angle.

2. Keep the headrest adjusted so that the centre of the headrest is level with your eyes. Don’t set the headrest too low as this can allow more serious injury in an accident.

3. When getting in, sit first then swing your legs into the car. When you get out, move the seat back before swinging your legs out.

4. Do you ‘ride the clutch’, resting your foot in the air? No wonder your ankles or calf muscles hurt.

5. To relax, raise your shoulders to your ears breathing in, and then lower them as you breathe out. You may want to do this at every red traffic light, or major junction.

6. Avoid reaching behind to get bags from the rear seat. Don’t be lazy. Get out and open the door.

7. Be careful when loading and unloading. Lift correctly.

8. Avoid lifting unnecessary weights. Get help to change a tyre.

9. Sit with arms gently bent at the elbow to the wheel and don’t lean forward out of the seat.

10. Wear a seat belt and make sure it is properly adjusted. Make sure children also have appropriate seat belts and cushions.

Remember

  • Prevention is better than cure.
  • Sit properly, drive relaxed.
  • Osteopaths can advise on posture.
  • Osteopaths treat neck and back pain – and a great many other things as well.
  • If you are unlucky enough to be involved in a road accident osteopathy can help relieve the pain of injury, especially whiplash-type injuries.
  • Osteopaths are often asked by solicitors to write medico-legal reports on accident

victims, to help them claim compensation.

causes of hip pain
Hip pain causes insomnia?

I have a huge pain in the night of my hips. I have a rare syndrome called McCune Albright weak bones they break easily. When divided fibrous dysplasia tends to accumulate that ends in pain, leaving me in pain at night for one of the causes of insomnia. I tried to take Tylenol but it dosent help. The doctor wants to prescribe a medication I fear that dependence and has terrible side affects. I know what is going through the withdrawal of morphine surgery several I lived. The question is are there any other alternative I can take that will help me sleep, take away the pain and is not a physical addiction. So not the good properties of the blood, because I was told it's bad if I have a Opper it bleed. Thanks and good sleep (. Any medicine to respond to Sandostatin LAR I'm under 18 Morphine is a highly addictive form of heroin I'm lying in my bed in pain suffering

Bisphosphonates are worth considering. There is evidence that contribute to pain and perhaps risk of fracture. For their own pain: tricyclic antidepressants in low doses are interesting, which contribute to pain and cause sedation. They are not the pain itself Killian. Tramadol is a analgecic with a low potential for addiction. After looking at the patches as Buprinorphone Fentanly OT. Both are opoiods but not produce "high" that only a small amount gets into your system over time. Used correctly, help, and I have a number of patients who do well with them.

Cause And Symptoms Of Osteoarthritis

In our last article, we briefly discussed Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  This article will take a close look at the cause, symptoms, and current treatment used for Osteoarthritis.  So let’s take a second look at what Osteoarthritis is.

Osteoarthritis is known by many as “wear and tear” Arthritis.  It is one of the most common forms of Arthritis and is the result of cartilage wearing away from the joints.  This cartilage is responsible for the smooth gliding of joints, and once it begins to deteriorate, the patient is left with pain, joint swelling and inflammation, and even deformity.

Osteoarthritis patients usually state that their pain is greatest during times of movement, and then lessens significantly during periods of rest.  Osteoarthritis affects many more women than men.  There is an estimated 24 million Osteoarthritis sufferers in the United States and roughly 74% are women.

The cause of Osteoarthritis is not known, yet doctors have many suspicions.  Some of the symptoms of Osteoarthritis boggle the minds of scientists and more research needs to take place to determine the actual root of the disease.  For instance, X-rays can tell that Arthritis is present, yet the amount of pain reported by Osteoarthritis sufferers differs from the results of the X-ray.  Though many people refer to Osteoarthritis as the “wear and tear” disease, evidence shows that this disease and its mysterious cause are not as simple as that definition.  In fact, “wear and tear” does not take place in just one joint, but affects joints simultaneously throughout the body.  An example of this, is that sufferers with Osteoarthritis of the knee, offer suffer Osteoarthritis in the hand.  Also, doctors have noted that patients don’t suffer with Osteoarthritis on just one side of the body (as would be expected due to wear and tear) but because it seems to affect the body concurrently, it appears that Osteoarthritis is a systematic disease affecting all of the cartilage at once.

One suggestion is that Osteoarthritis is a result of cartilage that has stopped functioning at optimum level.  Cartilage is continuously undergoing a process where it is broken down, then rebuilt.  Some theories state that this process becomes unbalanced and out of hand.  This is referred to as “End Stage Osteoarthritis.”  It is at this stage that joint pain and impairment begin to manifest.  There are many natural remedies that show promise in the management of Osteoarthritis pain and symptoms.  Look for future articles in our Arthritis Series that will offer natural remedies that may prevent enzymes from damaging cartilage.

Some other ideas that point to the cause of Osteoarthritis include:

·    Previous Sports related or Joint Injuries
·    Genetically Inherited (it appears that Osteoarthritis runs in families)
·    Repeated Occurrences of Bleeding into a Joint (as occurs with Hemophilia and other diseases)
·    Repeated Occurrences of Gout and Gout like Diseases
·    Avascular Necrosis- this is a condition where blood near a bone is cut off, this leads to bone death as well as joint damage.  Avascular Necrosis typically afflicts the hip joint.
·    Previous Rheumatoid Related Illness- such as Rheumatoid Arthritis can lead to chronic inflammation of the joints.
·    Osteoporosis-due to the high risk of bone fractures and injury, Osteoarthritis may develop in joints.
·    Metabolic Disorders- for example, Hemochromatosis can result in high levels of Iron being deposited in the joints
·    Joint Infection-It is believed that cartilage may deteriorate in people who have defects in their cartilage and joints.

We’ve discussed the potential causes of Osteoarthritis, now it is time to look at the various symptoms of Osteoarthritis.  The symptoms of Osteoarthritis include:

·    Joint Pain- this tends to be worse when rising in the morning
·    Joint Swelling and Inflammation- this occurs during periods of activity
·    Feeling a “Grinding” Sensation when a Joint is moved
·    Loss of Mobility and Flexibility

There is no sure way to prevent Arthritis in any of its forms.  There are however some things that you can do to help lower your risk of developing Osteoarthritis or any other type of Arthritis.  Some of the preventative methods that you may add to your lifestyle today include:

·    Maintain an Ideal Body Weight
·    Take steps to prevent the development of Osteoporosis.  Some of these include taking adequate Vitamin D and Calcium, exercising, and taking medication if needed.
·    Do your best to prevent injuring your bones and joints -try to avoid accidents such as sports related, implementing joint protection by using splints and braces.

These are Some of the Causes of the Lower Back Pain and Hip Pain

Lower Back and Hip Pain and important to note. Serious problems relating to back pain are of the hip and the lower back .Usually lower back and hip pain come hand in hand. Causes of hip pain are same as of lower back pain.

Basically your movements are affected if you are facing lower back pain and hip pain. This problem can not be removed fully and that is very painful. The old age people who face this problem are facing terrible experience. They have to stay at one place to avoid the movement and it is not possible for them to walk around their home.

If you ask your doctor the reasons of the lower back pain and hip pain, he may not give the answer. The causes of this pain are spinal stenosis, arthritis and a fracture. The pelvis, thigh bone and femur are together at hip joint. These bones have cover of articular cartilage, a different matter. It works as a shock absorber. Contraction and expansion with the pressure helps to protect the bones. The hip joint has a lubricating substance around the muscles. The hip joint has the capsule which can go in any direction as hip joint is the ball and socket joint. The nerves around this area come from lower back.

The causes of the lower back pain and hip pain occur at the same time are as follows.

Nerves serving the hip come from lower back and they are affected with neurological problem. Any muscle injury in lower back may affect hip muscles. This will be resolved automatically. But it is not easy to face such pain. Arthritis will affect both the organs hip and back.

From aging and use a situation arises where the fluid filled sacs get inflammation and this causes pain. An old age person may get fracture with the gentle fall. It could not be operated and hence the patient has to face the problem for his whole life.

Lower back pain can be treated with the regular treatment. After finding out the causes of the back pain doctor will suggest some medication with the exercise routine and the improvement in daily habits. Any change in the back pain should be pointed to your doctor. If there is pain in hip you should immediately contact your doctor because it may be a serious symptom of any other problem like arthritis or congenital hip problem. This is the situation where hip joint ball is not seated properly in the socket. If the socket is shallow the ball will move from the edge of the socket.

If your two legs are of different length then you might be facing the problem of hip pain. The arthritis also needs different treatment. These treatments are to be followed for longer period.

Treatment includes use of heat and cold water. Weight control and medicines against inflammation is necessary. Lower back and hips together give support to our whole body hence the attention to their problem is must for us to stand with strong support.

Best of the body low-impact aerobics background?

What are the best low-impact aerobic exercises for the hamstrings, calves, hips and buttocks? My knees make noise, no danger of cracking (w / or pain), though I'm young and fit. Apparently, it is fluid in the knees probably caused by my children dance and all physical activity. Therefore, I am afraid that exercises like squats and slots could aggravate my knees, but I want something more intense than yoga or pilates.

First, I would not underestimate Pilates or yoga. My Pilates helps my breathing, posture, flexibility, balance and overall strength — all good things. The best exercise for lower body, given its location, is the elliptical machine. The best thing (as most of gyms) have different programs (hill, random, manual, etc), and the settings of the resistance (the problem) and, of course, time. minute, the elliptical burns more calories. You can also do the reverse, which works the muscles in different ways. The hamstrings, calves, hips and buttocks are working very hard on the ellliptical. A second possibility is stationary recumbent bike, but you burn fewer calories per minute and does not work the lower body as well. On the other part, would like to recline a little variety is good if you're too tired to contest the ellipse, and of course you can sit, while the elliptical (A machine to simulate cross country skiing to some extent) is his position. You might also consider some machines with low body weight, rather free weight squats and cracks that you mentioned. legs, machines hamstrings, calves, calf extensions, curls ass veal calves, and everyone else can be done with minimum weight. crepitus, which is the sound experience, is generally benign, but you are right to be cautious. Move slowly and listen to your body. And good luck!

The Various Causes of Knee Joint Pain

If you’re not suffering from a particular form of joint pain yourself, you’ve surely heard a loved one complain about aching joints. Today, chronic joint pain is the most common type of pain people are confronted with, affecting one in three adults. Studies reveal that 40 percent of the US adults over the age of 45 suffer from some form of joint pain. However, it’s not uncommon for younger people to suffer from knee joint pain or elbow joint pain, especially due to sport injuries. Luckily, hundreds of remedies have been developed so far to help you obtain pain relief. At synotrex.com you’ll get the chance to find useful joint pain information and remedies.

Contrary to common opinion, joint pain isn’t only provoked by old age and diseases such as osteoarthritis. Of course, osteoarthritis represents one of the leading causes as it leads to the degeneration of the joint cartilages. However, knee joint pain or elbow joint pain commonly arises among a younger demographic because of injuries. Any sort of accident that leads to fractures, sprain, ligament or cartilage tear is very likely to cause joint pain in the future. Suffering from sharp pain in an injured joint is very common after sustaining an accident. These days, you can get join pain relief with OTC or prescription drugs and even with natural products, such as Synotrex, that promote healthy joint function.

Apart from osteoarthritis and injury, several other diseases can cause chronic joint pain. Tendonitis for instance is the inflammation of the tendon that joins the muscle to the bone. Tendonitis is commonly known to cause wrist, shoulder or elbow joint pain. Bursitis is a somewhat similar affection to tendonitis, which causes an inflammation of the so-called Bursae sacs, leading especially to hip and knee joint pain. Even infectious diseases like flu can cause joint pain as a secondary effect. Autoimmune disorders such as lupus also affect the joints, as well as other organ systems of the body.

With joint pain being such a common affection, many remedies and lifestyle suggestions have been developed to help those in need of relief. The good news is that with so many remedies at hand you’ll still be able to live a long and active life. Certain types of physical exercise are even recommended in obtaining pain relief. If you’re suffering from knee joint pain or any other form of joint ache it is best that you see a specialist before deciding on a treatment. A doctor may also be able to indicate a special diet to help you get back on track. If you’re overweight, it’s very likely that a specialist will recommend a weight-loss diet to remove the added pressure from your joints.

Although millions of people all over the world are suffering from joint pain, there are plenty of remedies that can help them lead a normal life. No matter what causes your pain, you can go for a natural remedy that doesn’t attack your organism. Synotrex Advanced Joint Formula is highly recommended for naturally treating elbow joint pain or knee joint pain.

Back Pain: the Epidemic

Back pain is a major problem these days for people all over the western world. It has been estimated that at any one time 20% of the population suffer from lower back pain and that doesn’t take into account all the other forms like sciatica, upper back pain, mid back pain and neck pain. It is a huge interruption in a sufferers day to day life and costs the world billions of dollars in productivity.

Back pain is caused by numerous reasons, primarily muscle imbalances from injury, diet, obesity, posture, exercise and more.

Back pain treatments vary depending on the diagnosis of your pain and can vary from a passive mobilization, to drugs all the way to surgery .

There are various back pain relief measures both natural and pharmaceutical available. Chronic and severe back pain may require temporary medication to allow the acute back pain to settle. However if you take a natural healing approach along with the medication, you should get a better longer lasting result.

Sciatica is one type of back pain affecting a large number of people these days. It is characterized by pain in the hip and buttock region and sometime includes referred pain down the leg. This can go down one or both legs into the thigh, calf, ankle and foot. Stretching is often prescribed for back pain and sciatica but rarely provides any lasting relief .

Some natural steps for back pain relief are:

Lose Weight – Try to stay slim. If you have excess weight on your upper body, it will overload on your back. Practicing yoga or tai chi are natural ways of back pain treatment that can also assist with weight loss.

Eat Healthy – Vitamins and minerals are important for your overall health. So, try to eat as much healthy food as possible to help get rid of stress in your body and get relief from back pain.

Massage – Massage a common choice for people trying to get relief from back pain. It also acts as great stress reliever. But if you have acute back pain, do consult a skilled back pain therapist before going for a massage.

There are certain other techniques like yoga, exercise, massage acupuncture and chiropractic that prove to be effective back pain treatments for some sufferers. Others prefer to take medication prescribed by their doctor to lessen the irritation of back pain but they are not good for health. Adopting the natural approach to get back pain relief is therefore considered to be the most sensible approach to take if you can find someone skilled enough to do the job.

Need Yoga DVD Recommendations?

I am looking for a good Yoga DVD. I have lower back pain from time to time and my job is stressing me out. So I am looking to relax and stretch out my back muscles. Also, I am guy, so I am looking for a female instructor (don’t really want to see another dude contort himself) and a classical or new age soundtrack. I don’t want to hear today’s hip-hop hits in the background as I want to escape. Thanks.

Join Netflix they have a terrific selection for the same price you can have a bunch of different ones to find what you like and can keep them as long as you want.

Running Hip Pain Bursitis

running hip pain bursitis
How I can ease back into the race after a bad case of hip bursitis?

I have been training for a marathon became pain in my hip. One day, I ran three miles with hip pain that shot down my leg and almost made me fall. I continued to run and had the same stabbing pain again along the route. I was stupid and did not stop running until the three miles was made. For two weeks after he could not walk without limping. Now I can walk much, but when I start running, I still feel a slight acute pain in the hip. It has been five weeks since the fateful run three miles. When I can start running again?

You may have to take much more time off around the hip to heal completely, but also cross-trained to maintain the physical condition. ATV and pool running can help. I would say at least six weeks to take more to run, a bike, swimming and other low-impact activities, and then begin shortly by little, working one or two miles per day for a week or two and see how it feels. If pain persists, see a sports coach or doctor to see if other thing.
