Hip Replacement Surgery (cost, medicaid, aftercare?)?
My boyfriend broke his hip several years ago and it has been detiorating it has gotten to the point now where it will lock up where he can’t walk. He went to the er and the doctors told him he’ll need a hip replacement in 4 months or he won’t be able to walk again. He’s only 21, we have a baby on the way, what will help cover the surgery? Also, what will caring for him after the surgery be like?
Most health insurance will cover hip replacements. If he is on SS disability and has medicare & a medicare supplement insurance, that will also cover the procedure and he should have few out-of pocket expenses.
Depending on where you live, the total of all costs related to hip replacement surgery in the US may be upwards of $30,000. I had mine 7 years ago in a small midwestern city and my HMO paid the hospital $11,000 after “adjustments’ of about $7,000. That figure didn’t include the surgeon’s fee; my primary care physian’s fee; anesthesiologist’s fee; outpatient PT for 5 weeks; 2 weeks of home care by a visiting nurse and therapist; pre-op and follow-up physician visits and labs; drugs; and durable equipment rental.
He’ll need some help at home right after surgery. He won’t be able to lift & carry heavy weight and will have some movement and positional restrictions for awhile. He’ll also be using a walking aid of some sort (walker, crutches, cane) for a couple of months or longer. The first few days at home will probably be the hardest so it will help if someone fixes his meals and he probably won’t be approved to drive for several weeks so he’ll need someone to run errands, take him where he needs to go, etc. Otherwise he should be relatively self-sufficient. They will teach him how to negotiate stairs and curbs at the hospital; teach him how to safely dress and undress, maybe even prepare a simple meal. I’ve had both hips replaced in separate surgeries and these were the kinds of things I was taught before I was dismissed to go home from my 4-day hospital stay. I was approved to drive at about 5 weeks. I had most of my restrictions lifted at 3 months.
